Running on fumes...

So, I set my destination as the 2nd star to the right and headed out. I wasn't really noticing - or at least, not realizing how significant it was - that settled systems were becoming more and more rare. In fact, I was out in the middle of nowhere.

Then I see a Sidewinder (I'm in a type-6) and wonder, 'How's he so far out here? He shouldn't have the range to....'

Brain begins to function - *I don't have a fuel scoop.*

My tank is about 1/4 full. I find the closest settled system - 55Ly away. Not sure I can make it.

My LAST POSSIBLE jump, and I'm there. BUT - the only station is still 3K+ away.

My main tank goes dry and I still have a ways to go. I coast in with this left in my reserve:

That was close.

What is the point of a reserve tank if you continually use up the reserves, I ask you!?

Is there a way to force the ship to use the main tank first?

Cheers!

The way I understand it, the fuel tank feeds into the reservoir, which feeds into your power plant to run the rest of your systems. When your reservoir empties out normally, it'll pull a bolus of fuel from the main fuel tank and refill itself. It's all one big tank of fuel, but for some reason they divide it up like this.

Wow. Nice. :)
If you're low on fuel, always switch off as many modules as possible. For example shields are really hungry.

Man I wish I had known about this when I ran out of fuel for the first time without a scoop and no fueling stations in the system. Clicking that self-destruct button was a bitter-sweet moment :(

Yes. Modules and thrusters, plus SC engines take the fuel from reserve. Jump drive eats directly from the main tank :)

Hehe, yes. One is always learning in this game, right? :D

Notice that it isn't called a Reserve tank, it's called a Reservoir. There is a difference. The Reservoir tank feeds off the main tank when it gets empty. The Main tank is used for your FS jumps. The Reservoir is used for everything else.

Ouch. Isn't there like... an emergency broadcast frequency?
