Running out of oxygen causes entire ship to explode for no reason. Why, exactly?

So my ship was destroyed by the most ridiculous mechanic in the game.. Simply running out of Oxygen.. And I don't understand why this mechanic exists. (First time this has ever happened to me)

For example, every ship seems to be equipped with an escape pod that just magically saves your pilot from certain death. You could be surrounded in a hell fire of explosions caused by laser fire and missiles, and everything known to man.. Ship is destroyed.. but wouldn't ya know.. your pilot is safe and sound at the nearest space port due to the aid of the indestructible escape pod. Left with the insurance bill of having to replace a destroyed space ship.

So why can't this magical escape pod just abort your pilot, leave the intact ship abandoned, and transport your pilot to the nearest space station.. While your empty ship just floats in space, waiting to be retrieved. But instead of having to pay an insurance bill of a destroyed ship, simply pay a towing fee to the Pilot Federation for having to tow your ship, while still intact, back to the nearest space station? The towing fee could be simply the size of the ship (flat rate depending on what it is) plus the distance traveled to have your ship brought back to the nearest star port.. Or at least the last star port you have visited.

Obviously the ship doesn't need oxygen to survive.. Your pilot does.. but the pilot has the escape pod to survive and make it back to safety.

It just doesn't seem realistic at all, that your pilot can escape death from the most impossible of outcomes.. But kiss your ship goodbye for running out of a resource the ship doesn't even need to survive.

This game is all about immersion and all that.. but does it really have to be that unforgiving for something that simple?

... or you could just make the ship out of the same material the escape pod is made of.

:)

But yeah your point is good. Would be an interesting game element if we could expand on the up and coming megaship subsystem targeting thingy, if we can target subsystems on derelict ships and sent limpets to hack into the hull and retrieve optional modules, cargo, or ammo.

The only thing I can think of would be that using the ejection seat would trigger a self-destruct sequence to avoid potential insurance liabilities from pirates using 'dead' ships that they have salvaged.

Other than that, I have no idea.

This, mainly.

It's a bit silly, but otherwise if nothing bad happened when you ran out of air, there would be no point it being in the game.

Elite Dangerous' universe is a very wasteful society. Lol

Lol .. what to answer ... it's true that we just have to die.

If this reassures you in many games, the management of death is incredible, except in those where we are endowed with a capacity of resurrection and unlimited death integrated to its scenario.

it would still be nice to see an ejection system at work for this one, or at least an elaborate death management, but how to do it, it's not really simple.

otherwise I think the indestructible life capsule is a big scam for us to fall asleep, but I live it well, no worries :p

you know it should be true survival capsule, the size of a SRV at least, with micro-thruster, a distress beacon and all the necessary to stay alive a good time (with a limited oxygen capacity) or even be ejected directly in space suit, I hope when the year 3000 they are more efficient than today.

with a npc ship that comes quickly to our rescue.. If you are more than 10,000 light years away from the living space, do not ask yourself too many questions Lol.
