RX 480 8GB VR performance, deciding between Rift and Vive

How does the RX 480 8GB perform in VR with Elite: Dangerous? I've got a Sapphire Nitro RX 480 and want to purchase either a Rift or a Vive soon.

Right now, I play E:D on a 1080p 3D TV at a side-by-side resolution of 960x1080 with AMD's Virtual Super Resolution on, the in-game resolution set to 2560x1440, and in-game supersampling set to 1.5. In-game text is crisp and readable. Would Virtual Super Resolution work with an HMD?

As for the Headsets, what is the current state of one versus the other? I've read a lot of threads here, and I think it's that the Rift has banding issues while the Vive has smaller perceived scale and resolution issues. Is that the latest? Is text in the Vive readable now without jumping through hoops?

All of the issues are annoying if you let them. All of the issues can be overlooked if you try.

Neither the Rift, not the Vive is perfect, but both of them are a pretty good try for first-generation hardware.

Virtual Super resolution sounds like a fancy name for supersampling to me. Both the Rift and Vive have options for SS in many games, including ED (which has HMD Quality and Supersampling, slightly different rendering paths).

I'm not too familiar with the AMD GPU's but it looks like the RX480 would be fine to start VR off with it, but you will likely be using lower settings than you use in 2D, with less supersampling.
Your image quality will drop, and be a bit pixelly/lower resolution - but this los is exchanged for real presence inside your ship cockpit. That's the tradeoff with current HMD's.
