you're having a laugh right? trading is honest and the most profitable. exploring is honest. mining is honest. yeah, you can cheat and steal, but the rewards and risks don't match those for trading.

Please do NOT look at the gameplay for GTA, unless you like to think that that's why beating up a streetworker with a baseball bat gets you +REP and stealing cars has no consquences.
ED is a game that gives you choices. Trading in rare drugs like Onion Head or smuggling slaves past the Police.
Shorter version: ED is a game.
I have yet to come across a griefer/ganker. No doubt they exist, but only in heavily populated areas where a lot of noobs hangout. By travelling just a few light years out you won't meet another soul for weeks at a time. In my opinion, the forums are littered with negative comments, but thats only because FD is quite active in the forums and people expect improvements. On the whole I don't have a problem with the game.
Piracy is part of ED and is based on a risk/reward model be it a NCP or a player that is out to get your cargo. They are not there to blow up your ship, they just want your cargo. I have yet to meet a player pirate, but there is only one thing they will get from me and that is projectiles from the wrong end of my multi-cannons.
There is also a lot of players out there who go about helping the noobs. If you find yourself in trouble message someone in-game or on the forum and there'll be volunteers more than willing to help you out.

They say you work hard and get the rewards. They often forget to mention any luck that may be involved. However the universe is full of people that have worked hard and have reaped the rewards. It is also full of people that don't want to work for the same rewards and so they just cheat, lie and steal for what they can get. This is life as we know it, real or otherwise.

The vast majority of the credits I have made come from exploration. Who have I stolen from? Who have I cheated?
There is a kernal of a point here, the ED Universe is not a soft and cuddly place, but this is going a bit too far.
Its meant to reflect society in general.

Um, Mr. Browny51 (or Mrs., unsure)...have you actually tried smuggling or pirating? I'm really questioning the depth of your game knowledge right now.

There are worse games on the market that promote bad messages, like GTA. ED is a small drop in the bucket. Really.
