Sag A attempt in an Orca... Crazy? Possible? Opinons please

So I took my ExplOrca out on a short shake down cruise this weekend (just 1,000ly and back). And I must say with its 18 Ly jump range that took awhile. Not that taking your time is bad...as I enjoyed exploring the systems I came to. But I have a concern:

I don't want to get 1/2 way, 3/4 way to Sag A to realize either 1) I cant go any further due to reduced jump range of Orca vs. a ASP and 2) get all the way out there and suffer the space madness of needing the 1,400 jumps to get back.

Do you all think its crazy to take an Orca out? Or have there been others that have gone out with a <20ly jump range and had no issues?

Im seriously considering selling the Orca and getting an ASP. But that makes me sad as I still feel the ExplOrca is the best looking ship to be a deep space science ship if it wasn't for the abysmal jump range.

If your jump rage is 15+ it should not be an issue.. The Core is full of stars, and the rift just corewards of Sol is still pretty thick with them.
Space Madness is another thing.. my first attempt at SagA* was in a 19LY range Cobra, and it failed, but not because of space madness, it was the bad combo of beer and speed-scooping.. and a white dwarf..
My second attempt in the same cobra, but with an A grade FSD by then and 25LY range succeeded... Space Madness started to set in during the return trip though, but I got better.

I took a combat FDL to Sag A* and returned safely home. 14.26ly jump range. ~2,600 jumps there, ~2,600 back. It will be considerably easier with an Orca, but probably not a weekend trip unless you turn it into a grind/race.

In terms of absolute requirements, you could probably make it with a 10ly single jump range, it would just take forever.

With the 18ly range on your Orca, you are likely looking at over 3k jumps total to complete a round trip, but if you take your take your time and actually want to explore on the way there, it's not really going to hurt you...just be prepared to be gone for a while.

Ok Cdr I'd say space madness has probably set on already. That's ok we all get a bit "off" out there.
Next, question regarding Orca, I'm pretty sure I've seen other posts ref Orca and SagA* (or any other long range exped) before so it is possible.
Asp is made for exploring, hence its name. They are ruggedly beautiful things that get under your skin. Physically they are the antithesis of the Orca. My point is if Imperial aestheticism is your thing, and you like visually beautiful things then the Asp will drive you proper nutty.
If you want a really REALLY good explorer then you will love the Asp.
Of course if you want a ship that wishes it were an Asp then you can waste your credits on a DBE.
My advice would be think carefully about taking an 18LY jump range ship on a 36K LY round trip. It's doable but it might send you mental. Asp in comparison gives you a whopping 35LY range, which lessens the impact of banana yellow fairies dancing on your pilots workbench when you are 20KLY out.
My tuppence worth of advice Cdr. Good luck.

Thank You Cmdr.... Im in no big hurry. I plan on taking my time and enjoying myself. Maybe running a few hours during the weekday and a few on the weekend (I can see maybe 10-20 hours a week). So if it takes me 2 or 3 months Im fine. I just didn't want to take the time to do this then hit a brick wall 15k ly out and not be able to progress.

Agree...I originally had a fully kitted ASP ready to go. But I just couldn't do it... the ASP is just not what I would picture a ship of science to be (Im a star trek nut....). The ExplORCA is the one for me. I will take her out and we will take our time. Learn to love one another.... my crew of 30 (pilots, engineers, scientist) will take a long time to get there and back...but we will do it in STYLE and COMFORT :)

I recently returned from my trip to Sag A in a clipper with a sub-20 jump range. There's no technical limitation at play, and as a special bonus there was NO lag in plotting 1000LY routes in the core.

ExlplORCA? Surely for this trip it should be an Orc A*? ;)

Anyhoo - as others have said, heading corewards you should have little, or no trouble with that jump range. Your biggest enemy will be the monotony of the sheer number of jumps...I've just come back in a ship with 22ly range, and what helped me through it was a few Iain M. Banks Culture audio books...helped make the time fly by! :)

I took a explorer orca out to about 1750 ly, it was a bit of a grind but I took comfort in a few luxuries, some top quality brandy, top notch rare trade goods food and a handful of nice slave girls. If you're into role play then do it, just imagine the parties you'd have when you got there!. if you just want to get to the core of the galaxy then try something else.

Take a look at the buckyball race to Sag A, CMDRs took every ship available, including vulture, dropship, even an eagle.
Go for it! What's the worse that can happen?
