In July 3301 the idea of a major expedition from Sol to the opposite side of the galaxy following the Sagittarius-Carina arm was suggested to the FGE Staff Group by expedition member commander Corbin Moran.
The idea was enthusiastically received and preparations for the expedition began immediately.
The expedition commenced at 17:00 on August 1, 3301 with members gathering in space near Galileo star port, orbiting Earth's moon, to form a ceremonial starting flotilla.
(The flotilla starting to form up at Galileo - Cmdr Ratking15)
The flotilla of 15 ships paused for a photo session, then hyper spaced in formation to Alpha Centauri.
From there members made their way individually to Brackett Orbital in the HIP 83716 system to rendezvous with other First Great Expedition pilots.
At Brackett Orbital the expedition was organized into several wings which departed on different headings for the Lagoon Nebula.
It was several months, twenty thousand light years and four base camps later, that a decision was made to turn around and go back to the bubble.
The reason behind this basically was the Horizons release and the fact we could now land on planets.
As the whole mission was going to take at least a year to finish, a lot of the FGE members did not want to miss out on the opportunities SRVs and synthesis would give us.
So in December 3301 nearly all of us returned from the black and started our SRV training in earnest.
Before we could start back on the mission, another expedition was proposed on the FD forums, which of course was the ‘Distant Worlds Expedition’.
The DW expedition has grown far beyond everyone’s imagination and become the main focus for a lot of explorers in the Elite Dangerous community.
It has grown so big that a lot of the original members for the Sagittarius-Carina mission have joined the ‘First Great Expedition’ exploration wing within Distant Worlds.
Even though there may be only a fraction of the original 30+ FGE members still engaged in the expedition, we are still going to try and finish what we originally set out to do!
I will try to update this thread with the expedition progress, base camp surveys, point of interests and anything else we find worth mentioning as much as possible.
