Hardware & Technical Saitek help for supernoob

Hi All
I'm really struggling at the moment. I'm feeling rather overwhelmed by the number of options on my Saitek controller, to the point that I can't even land my Sidewinder on the first Tutorial. I've completed that tutorial fine with mouse and keyboard, but when I ease down with the Saitek controls I just bounce up and down on the floor without ever landing. What am I doing wrong? Also are there any template control suggestions for the Saitek you could direct me to. I'm feeling its going to take me quite some time to get used to them.
Many Thanks
CMDR Ryu Mnemosyne

Remember to deploy your landing gear. I have mine bound to Toggle 9/10 (so it doesn't matter which way you push it in a hurry). There are heaps of options for binding your controls, it's extremely customiseable - which unfortunately means that one person's perfect setup can be someone elses perfect nightmare.

Open the Saitek control panel, press all the buttons, and make a note of which numbers are which. Think of what you'd like each to do, go into the game, and then in the controller setup select those buttons and axes for your controls. It will probably take many tries to get a setup you are really happy with - I'm still working on mine from Alpha.

Good luck Commander!

Thank you, its something I've begun with pieces of paper all over my desk with button numbers scribbled on them. With regard to the landing though its really confusing. The way I have docked to date I've noticed you get some sort of lock on once your as close to landed as you need to be. I do have my landing gear out, I'm gently thrusting down as slow as can be, but no lock on. I just hit the floor and never get the docked signal.

Ryu, I had the same prob with my X52, to the extent I was off the game completely for a few months....
I then decided to sort it once and for all and I searched for 'X52' on here and read most of the posts, got into the SST sofftware, asked some questions then read some more....One thing I learned was not to try and assign every available button, switch, slider, hat etc, to the ingame control options....just click on 'controller' and select X52....try and suss what ED has assigned to what...some of the hats don't do anything in dock, only during flight for instance!
If you can't live with the standard set up, try assinging One button at a time...if it doesn't work change it back to what it was on screen (write stuff down first, before & after!)
By this time, you should be clued up a lot more than you are now....
We had to endure the settings we were used to, being wiped after every update!
Best of luck! (If in doubt ask again)....

You have to be in the middle of the landing pad ... that means, the x and y axis of the small hologram of the landing pad (in the middle of your dashboard) have to be highlighted in blue.
You also have to face the right direction (which normalle is away from a stations entrance ... in the holographic representation your ships model has to be facing upwards)

These pics I took from the big X52 thread, I'm too lazy to search for it now so I can't give the correct credit for it.

These are the base controls. I'd suggest you get used to them by flying around in the first mission until you know them by muscle memory. Then tweak them to personalise and fly around again to reinforce your changes. What you don't want to do is accidently boost because you've learned it one way and decided to change.

Since I only had Beta access I realised from reading Alpha experience I wanted to play the game with an X52 and it'd be wise to do it from the start, so no relearning new controls for me.

When I customised the bindings I worked on a copy so that I could always revert to a previous version. When I wanted to.
The *.binds are text files in XML format and one thing I found useful was to have a file open (not the one you are playing with) to search for an entry. I find it hard to remember where specific bindings are in ED. I use XML Notepad to view them it is a free XML editor.
My custom bindings are located below but some installations differ.

I've been caught up in work for a couple of days, but can I just thank everyone for this feedback it's very helpful. I'll write more tonight.

Today started in 3.9. Did canister tutorial, no problem. Went on to combat tutorial, unable to fire primary weapon..

Sw 1 main trigger switch on my Saitek X52 pro did not function, no response in control panel. I had to wait 4 weeks for this stick. My TWO previous X52 sticks I had too return with throttle indent issues. One failed after 3 months, its replacement lasted a week. 6 to 8 week to replace this one, so I repaired it instead..

I expect things to fail, but 3/3 not good. You can buy cheap but for what these cost I would have expected a better build quality..

I will not be purchasing any further products from this company.
