Saitek x-55 Rhino, and their profile for ED

So there's a Saitek provided profile for ED, and in game you can select the controller, what's the relationship here?
That is, I loaded the profile, and select the controller in-game, and it seems the mappings are still the same.

Sorry if my question is somewhat dumb... I guess I expected a different outcome.

So you're saying that there are two profiles for the stick. One inside ED, and one provided by SAITEK. Both are the same?

TBH, my initial reaction is... Ah well... Move on.

Well, I guess they are the same - I'm somewhat of a noob to ED, Saitek, and space sims overall.
But they certainly do feel the same.

That said though, perhaps in game, when you select the X-55, the game is coded to ignore the profile?
Only suggesting that since it seems to me, because the devs explicitly built code around the X-55, perhaps it does work that way.

Beyond all that, I have far too little experience here to map my own keys.
Stick arrived yesterday, and my last flight stick was the original Microsoft Sidewinder, way back when!

Gotta say though, the mappings are a little weird and cumbersome.
I use the default keyboard to shortcut to TARGET(#1) and SHIP (#4) panel, then a button on the thruster to navigate horizontally , and the stick to nav vertically.
Who's crazy idea was that to set up that way as default?

Sure, you can also use a thruster button to go into mouse look, and a hat on the stick to nav to the screens, but even that is messy as hell.

Then the game itself can be somewhat painful when it comes to the ESC key... some screens, it backs out of a menu, on others, brings up the HELP/SETTINGS/SAVE screen.
And pressing keyboard #2 brings up the COMM screen, and ESC breaks out of that screen - only mentioning that separately cuz in the cockpit, ESC does different stuff.
(Screens is seems built for mouse clicks seem generally to back out of a section with ESC I think)

So yeah, i think I needs to use a different layout - but ESC will still be a pain I think.

I saw this profile , which I though looked interesting, but didn't actually see a download for it:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=21522 (X55 Rhino Button Layout with Reference Card)

Wasn't sure if it was defined as a profile for Saitek, or mappings defined ingame.

Anyway, I appreciate your reading and commenting on my post.

I originally posted this on my site listed here but I after seeing this I thought id share it here as well as I think it would be of help. Below is a Retype as to not force anyone to my site. Hope it helps. The Flow is all wrong and jumps together so I applogise.

I just got my Rhino about a week ago and have been tweaking it out ever since. Personally I love the thing. It has more buttons than I could want! Previously I had an Old Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro 2 and then When to the Thrustmaster T.Flight X HOTAS. I only had my T.Flight X for just under 2 months when one of the buttons went out so I bit the bullet and got a REAL HOTAS.

So Here I am with my new HOTAS and ED and ready to go. I wasn't sure if I should just keeping mapping the joystick in game like I had with the other controllers, or to attempt to use the Software that came with my new Saitek X55 Rhino HOTAS so I tried both the in game settings, the Saitek HUD software, and even a combo setup up of the two. And after much googling, YouTubeing, and fiddling around with it, I think I've come up with the proper answer. Hopefully I can explain it in a way that's easy to understand and follow.

The quick answer, is that the in game X55 setting is there so that the Saitek software has an interface with the game. Since the HUD Software basically just emulates key presses on the keyboard or mouse, It has to have a reference to go by. So once you give every possible setting a key to use, you can then use the software to map those keys to joystick commands.

The nice thing is that they made one built in so each of us didn't have to go through and try to assign a key to each command, They did "Most" of it for us. I say most because there are still some settings that are not mapped. All the main ones are there but some of the more custom ones you'll need to still assign a key too. Although that requires a bit more work and a lot of people are happy with what is there. I can explain more if anyone has any questions on how to do that. The HUD software is very versatile and allows for some very interesting configurations and macros once you get used to it. I'm currently working on a "Request Docking" key bind for instance.

Now what makes this very use full is that once you have that key layout set, you then have the option to do 2 very interesting things.

  1. You can no easily swap buttons around on your joystick at will without having to reassign a key. Once you have the keyboard setting set. You can then select any key in the HUD software, click the arrow in the key binding, and it will give you a drop down of all the possible abilities. Don't like where that Select Next Target is? Now you can reassign it to a new position without having to wonder if that key is already in use. You could even have lets say boost programmed to 4 separate buttons if you wanted, although I don't know why you would.
  2. It gives you the ability to use that "Mode" selector. Now since each function has a home key. You can make one layout on lets say Mode 1 for fighting, Mode 2 as a layout for Travel, and Mode 3 for Mining. All without ever having to go into the game and reassign commands.

My setup is now selecting the X55 Controller Config in the ED Options. Then download the Saitek ED X55 Profile. You can get a complete X55 Games Profile Package Here or you can get just the ED X55 Profile Here

On top of that I would highly suggest getting VoiceAttack. With it and this HOTAS, You should never need to touch your keyboard again outside of chat.

I've also found the below link very useful. It has a very nice reference card maker so that you can easily make your own reference card for however you decide to configure your X55 Rhino. It also has some very nice prebuilt VoiceAttack Scripts for download.

Hope this has been helpful and please let me know if you have any questions on how I set this up.
