Newcomer / Intro Salvage Operation 101

Hi, total noob here. I have a noobish question. I've picked up this Encrypted Data Storage Salvage Operation mission from a station in Matet:

  • We need you to find the missing Encrypted Data Storage.
  • This cargo is unique to the mission and cannot be replaced if lost.
  • Search signal sources in the Dromi system to find them.
  • Take the items to Coelgo Station in the Matet system.
  • You will receive your reward upon delivery.
I scanned the signal source (I don't remember where it was) and received this message from an NPC called Executive Henry:

Subject: Nav Beacon Scan Data
"Scan complete, Commander. A potential salvage location is being uploaded to your ship's navigation data system now."

Target Body: Dimery Prospect

So I am now docked at Dimery Prospect and have no clue how to proceed. The Nav panel has these locations (amongst others)

DIMERY PROSPECT
RESOURCE EXTRACTION SITE
STEEL MENHIR
RESOURCE EXTRACTION SITE
RESOURCE EXTRACTION SITE [HIGH]
DROMI 1
MAWSON DOCK
NAV BEACON

Where am I supposed to go and what am I supposed to do to for this mission?

You wont be able to see it while docked. Need to be in SuperCruise.
Left Hand panel will show the USS in BLUE, so easy to spot. You might have to honk, you might have to target the nearby USS and resolve them (dont think so, but you might)

So I still need to scan another USS? I already scanned one earlier which gave me the link to Dimery Prospect, where I am now.

Pretty sure you just get that message either on system entry or on scanning the nav beacon. Enter SC, look for the target. Might not be especially close depending on system layout

Ok I went into supercruise and found a bunch of USSs. After scanning a few I got an updated nav list, one of which is blue and has "MISSION:" prefixed. I think I'm on the right track now. Thanks everyone for helping out this poor cadet; I'm usually terrified of forums but you guys seem like a terrific bunch of lads!

Hmm, I still think you're doing too much - all you should need to do is scan the Nav Beacon and it will reveal the blue USS, you don't need to drop in any others (at least for that type of mission). Keep a close eye on when the messages appear and it will hopefully make more sense. Glad you got it :)
