Salvage permits?

I'd really like to be able to buy or earn Salvage permits for a system. There's something chill about just hitting weak signal sources and scooping up the stuff I find (or salvaging the battlefield at Nav beacons and so on*), but then not being able to sell it except on a BM is slightly annoying.

* Found cannisters of Master Chefs the other day. I hope they were rescued in time to take part in the Great Xihe Bakeoff.

Salvage in elite is like finding a wallet on the street, but dont you dare pick it up! Cause you will be labeled a criminal.

you would think in space every commodity is needed, found some bring them to a station and they would be happy.

there should be a differance in stealing cargo and finding cargo.
if you pick up cargo from someone who died, but not by your hands. It should be finding cargo.

you can only get a salvage permit (for one kind of item, for one system) by picking up a legal salvage mission. if you have one, you can pick up as many items of that kind in that system as you want, and you could sell them via the commodity market.

There have been rumours about salvage licenses for some time but I don't think I have seen a definitive answer from FD as to whether we will ever get them. I would love them too.

Still it would be nice to be able to have a more general one. I'm coming at this from the angle of Salvaging being a mostly chill ad-hoc activity a bit like mining rather than an active mission running activity.

Salvage and salvage licences were a DDF discussion topic, but this feature did not make it into the initial game release. Maybe one day - at least we know FD were not against the idea, in fact quite the opposite.

Thanks for finding that thread. I'm a post launch joiner, so didn't know it had been discussed. I hope it makes it in someday.

If it helps you the way I currently balance it in my head:

Police arrive at ship destruction site: See 2 ships picking up survivors and equipment. Both finish and FSD out. One goes to the Anarchy system 1 jump away and offloads them as slaves and stolen goods for profit. The other is honourable and returns them to the faction space.
As a result of the chaos Police now require you to leave the station with the intent of rescuing (missions), and fit your ship with a scannable licence that runs out with the mission timer. Anyone without a licence gets killed.

On topic I'd also love a proper system based on your rep and previous actions (need some way of rescuing survivors) instead of selling them.

I'm not just talking about pods, though I really wish that the way to get rid of them wasn't to haul them around until the right missions pop or sell them; it just feels a bit off to me :( - but about say dropping into a weak USS and finding a field of random junk and maybe a few bits of wreckage. I'm not talking about shooting Rescue 1 to make it go away.

I think it would be nice to offer the purchase of salvage rights to ranked allies. Currently there isn't a lot of reason to be in tight with the Alliance. Salvage work would be a nice "unlock" the way that naval ships are for Fed/imperial rank (though it should unlock at a much lower level - salvage isn't prestige work :) )

What if salvage permits came with salvage trackers, they'd report what salvage you'd collected, if that salvage doesn't get delivered to a salvage office you'd be fined x amount of the items value?

As someone who joined this gae with the intention of playing a deep space exploration and salavage expert, I wholeheartedly support this idea
