Salvaged Escape Capsules - What do you do with them?

I'm a scavenger, I like wandering around planets picking up whatever I find, and whenever I come across an escape capsule I'll pick it up of course.

Currently several thousand light years from the bubble & came across a POI with a crashed ship & 6-8 more escape capsules (getting a lot of these & not much juicy cargo). I have 77 already on board, yes, yes the right thing to do clearly is to collect these too & reduce my 'Vette's jump range even further but...

This one had a System Defence Force AspX parked nearby. I figure an AspX can probably hold quite a bit right?

I do feel a little guilty

I don't like "selling" them on the Commodity Market. So I dock at a station, and then jettison them. I have to imagine from there that station services takes them to the appropriate medical facilities.

I wish that some of the pods would offer rewards for return to a specific port. Would add to the interest of finding them.

Yeah, the commodity market description doesn't even mention that there is a person in there; it's just about the materials.

Sounds like they toss the pods straight into the smelter...

Quite the pile of pods you found there :)

As has already been said, the only thing you can do with them is sell them to a commodity market. What happens to them after that is up to your own imagination :)

There used to actually be missions to rescue downed pilots, and you'd have to find the pods and return them with a time limit. I miss those, and I hope they come back.

It would also be cool if you could do some space rescues.

Maybe in the future we'll see more of that.

I salvage quite a bit as I enjoy planetary excursions, the Keelback I tend to use is light on cargo space so I just have to leave the escape capsules behind as they just do not pay enough alas ! It seems ED is a harsh place where people's worth is less than raw materials. Also unlike the cans you cannot bounce them around in low G which is no fun ! (I think ?)

When you salvage an escape capsule you should get back the cash you paid on one of your insurance claims.

I know it is "disconnected" from reality because YOU ended up in an escape capsule when your ship was destroyed and you paid an insurance claim.... but hey, think of it as karma coming back to you.

Because they're meaningless, selling them into a Commodity Market makes zero sense whatsoever and since nothing comes from bringing them to a Station (the Game mechanics basically stop where actual Gameplay would start)... I ignore them.

When picking them up and bringing them home has a different effect than scooping up a ton of salvaged Scrap, I might begin to get interested.

Frontier might as well have tossed Credit Canisters around everywhere - pick it up and get anywhere from 40 to 25000Cr instantly transferred to your Account. It would be the same.

Ever read about "shanghaiing"? :)

I mostly just stack them up then drive SRVs through them and pretend I'm bowling, or jettison them as I flee from combat.

One thing I've been doing is finding Search & Rescue ships at some USSs. When I do I then jettison the pods and the rescue ships scoop them up. They don't acknowledge it and I am unsure if it effects your reputation but it seemed to be a better thing to do rather than selling them at a station.

Hmm... Interesting. I would have thought that this would incur a "dumping" fine. I will take a look at trying this.

'Emergent Gameplay' ;)

That's more my kind of solution, I like that :)

The pile in the headlights of my srv are the 77 jettisoned from my hold, the POI & NPC AspX are in the background. I'm sure they'll be fine ;)

Note: I used the "abandon" option while jettisoning them. A SAR Anaconda moved right in and scooped the lot. No fine, no comms directed at me although if you find a SAR fleet (usually an Anaconda and a few Asps with Red and Yellow paint jobs) the comm each other about nearby wreckage. I just flew slowly toward them and dropped the pods in staggered intervals so that the SAR ships had time to scoop em. They seem to prioritise pods over other salvage.
I really wish FD would develop SAR gameplay more. Maybe in a future update perhaps?

Just a FYI.....Don't abandon the Escape Capsules.
I salvaged an Escape Capsule and when I was selling off some other legal salvage in the Commodity Board, I saw a special place for Salvaged Escape Capsules, that showed up just like when you do a Rare Goods run.

I received ~3500 Cr for just the 1 Escape Capsule.
