Samsung Odyssey Oddity

Having read several different reviews regarding Samsung Odyssey and Elite: Dangerous I'm somewhat confused.

Same display technology as Rift and Vive but with higher resolution (DPI), yet the relatively few reviews available state that text is less legible?

Based on the spec sheet the Samsung Odyssey should be the best HMD currently available for seated VR, but apparently it isn't?

I also read in one review that it might be an issue that FD could rectify through code optimising, but that's beyond me.

Does anyone understand what is going on? A response from FD would be nice as well. :)

It is confusing - some reviews say it looks better than Rift and Vive, others say the lower quality lenses make it look about the same :-(

I was one of the first to review the Odyssey with Elite. If you read my whole thread (posted a couple of updates), I think you'll find my review and comparison is pretty complete. (Of course I do! ;-)

anyway...

The image quality on the Odyssey is noticeably better than the rift. The image (on average) is brighter, more colorful, and clearer. Text is also noticeably clearer.

However,

The Rift is buttery smooth in its display quality. The Odyssey has some framerate and/or judder issues on those screens which support mouse use (Galmap, Sysmap, Sation Menus) - regardless of whether you use the mouse of not... Its just that it appears the one thing in common with all the views which have judder issues is that they support mouse input (not that you have to be using it). This is the biggest issue with the Odyssey right now and I expect its due to the microsoft "MR4VR" (Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR) connector which is still in beta.

The Rift also has a larger visual sweet spot than the Odyssey. The Odyssey's sharpness falls off quicker towards the edges than the Rift.

The Odyssey doesn't suffer as much from SDE or God Rays as the Rift, but the Odyssey has its own reflectivity issues with the lenses. Unlike the God Rays on the Rift which emanate directly from bright pixels IN the image, the Odyssey is more prone to cast long reflections from bright pixels at the edge of the view (i.e. the bright lights on the seat controls in the cockpit)

The Odyssey's tracking is spot on.

The Odyssey doesn't fit my head as comfortably as the Rift but I also have a relatively large, horribly deformed, noggin'. ;-)

All-in-all, I'm back to using the Rift until the "Judder" issues get resolved ("MR4VR" related I'm guessing). The visuals during flight are great, but the display judder problems on certain specific screens is completely immersion breaking...

Once they get the specific Judder issues resolved, I'll likely switch back to the Odyssey. For me, the judder probs are a killer...

My experience with the headset was not a good one unfortunately.

The graphics were really good, but the text was blocky, pixelated and unreadable. In fact, going back through some old posts on here, it looked a lot like a problem that people had with the Vive, but was fixed by Frontier back in the day for that headset. I also had a lot of issues in hitting the sweet-spot for this display. It's got a very small sweet spot.

I ended up returning mine and I recently picked up a Rift on Craigslist to use while I wait for my Pi-8k for VR stuff outside of Elite.

For Elite, I returned to my tried and tested Pimax 4k/B1. It was so strange, its less resolution than the Samsung, but text renders perfectly on this headset.

Cliff house was pretty good ... Until Oculus released the new Dash - which is a lot cooler.

oh - and I have to say that you missed a perfect opportunity to entitle this post "Samsung Space Oddity" :)

Sadly I haven't been able to find any reviews that say text is good in E: D.

What's a corner-case bug?

In engineering, a corner case (or pathological case) involves a problem or situation that occurs only outside of normal operating parameters

I was already using a pimax 4K headset with its own hooked into SteamVR, even though I uninstalled it, there may have been some residual configuration or cache somewhere that was causing problems..

I don’t think anyone else was using that combination.

Ok. Thanks for the explanation. :)
