San Diego Zoo

San Diego Zoo.jpg

Welcome everyone to the recreation of one of the most well known zoos in the world! This is my longest project to date which began planning in late 2021 and has gone through many stages to reach the project we see today. From bare bones zoo design with premade steam workshop blueprints that only vaguely represented the zoo, to one of the most detailed zoo projects there is in planet zoo. The San Diego Zoo features over 100 habitats, 100 acres of total zoo space, and landscaping bringing us down to 20 metres below the flat map. Join along and find out how much work is behind my real zoo recreations.

December 2023 update:

I am no longer continuing this project! 2 years, 2 computers and 2 attempts at trying to recreate the san diego zoo resulted in failed attempts to complete the zoo. The zoo is far too big for the game to handle even though it isnt the largest zoo out there. The sheer quantity of habitats, roughly 105 habitats, creates such awful performance that it isnt possible to continue the project. I will be moving onto other more manageable recreation projects.

The project managed to complete roughly under half of the zoo containing 47 habitats and 34 exhibits in: the discovery outpost, wildlife explorers basecamp, flamingo lagoon, australian outback, urban jungle, bear canyon, sun bear forest, panda trek, and kopje area of africa rocks.

Be sure to check out my youtube channel where you can see lengthy speedbuild videos and shorter walkthrough videos of the entire zoo - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsvfqXlKTdUcgmOnhWf6BxQ

While the first post looked at my past 2 months of progress, in mainly the discovery outpost - this weeks update looks at a new area. Heading northwards into the zoo i have now finished the Australian Outback area which i now love the koalas (first time actually using them)

So the new outback area features - 2 Static kookaburra aviaries using workshop sourced birds, a european badger habitat which is a placeholder until frontier hopefully adds the tasmanian devil, 4 koala habitats in the new queenslander house (2 male, 2 female habitats with 8 koala in total). There is also the outback plaza with the sydney grill and shoppe (cafe + gift shop) plus lots of picnic benches.

A quick expansion has been added to san diego in the form of the urban jungle. Not impressed with the habitat quality at all but recreations means featuring the good and bad parts of a zoo. So the only missing part of the 'jungle' is the zebra/donkey habitat which should of been where the giraffe house is but the games requirements for giraffes are either huge or san diego has a small habitat for them in modern standards anyways.
So the jungle includes the giraffe habitat with gazelle {also a keeper talk), a subpar flamingo pool which is literally a forage pool and some grass, a static aviary for some kind of bird (i added a cockatoo), a half decent kangaroo habitat and a long ish cheetah habitat. My favorite part is the indian rhino habitat which is in the center of the jungle loop

So the top of the canyon is pretty much done and path continues onwards to africa rocks and elephant odyssey but yeah the top of the canyon at least front street is more or less completed. The rest of front street is on hold until asian passage and africa rocks is completed due to tricky elevation to work out first. Also that last picture is an interesting one - my brash attempt at trying to integrate a 4x4 safari station into the path as the safari rides acts as the bus tours and travels 100 percent on paths

Work on the canyon terrain goes very slowly never mind the absolute joy (/s) to create realistic terrain for hours on end. Near future updates should include - Bear grottos, sun bear forest, fern canyon and the orangutan trail but in the mean time lets look at what makes a successful recreation from someone who lives on the other side of the planet.

20220722121834_1.jpg
1658490808335.png

Rex the lion guards the entrance - recreation is left while irl reference is right. I cannot take the credit of creating the sculpture - goes to steam user Capricaa13

So online references (real pictures to respective owners) is how i get my works sorted out - I have received not an ounce of help from any local although lots of thanks from locals on how realistic it is which is great motivation to keep continuing this mega zoo. Google maps, YouTube ('Zoos Travelers' and 'Socal Disney Dad' are fantastic at covering the zoo in detail) and occasionally some help from the zoochat albums. Basically i can watch or see the layout of the zoo on YouTube then refer to google maps for the reference sizing and basically translate it into the game - I know this is not an easy skill as so many people attempt recreating real life zoos and don't succeed. I counted at least 6 san Diego attempts found on the workshop and reddit alone.

Flamingo lagoon is the first habitat you see upon entering the zoo, reference is a different angle but you get the just of it

As anyone familiar with the zoo , the reference pictures are looking at front street. Front street is the name of the main path that goes north/south of the main entrance where most of the bigger shops and food areas are to cater to the high numbers of guests flowing in and out of the zoo. Key highlights of front street would include Flamingo lagoon, the reptile house, bus tour loading station , the zoo gift shop and safari kitchen/sweet shack - now I know front street incudes outback and start of Africa rocks but this is the main section of front street being looked at.

20220722123047_1.jpg
1658492040915.png

Speaking of the bus station - here it is although slightly adjusted to fit the 4x4 safari ride

The bus tour is actually being implemented along no buses just a 4x4 safari ride but all on paths. So the track is hidden just under the path giving the impression of the 4x4 driving on the paths like the irl buses. The route follows the kangaroo stops i believe which is bus station - lost forest/asian passage junction - northern frontier near the cougar habitat - elephant odyssey/africa rocks junction - urban jungle (you can see the urban jungle stop in the previous post)

An earlier picture of my sweet shack food area, I bet you might notice the in game gondola is uh pretty big

Restarting Development - walkthrough: Front Street

Alright lets start again with my interest in the zoo returned with a better computer to actually have animals in my zoo this time around. So as we may know i have completed the san diego front street with various habitat zones completed like the explorer basecamp, reptile walk, urban jungle, australia and the bear grottos. Now lets forget i had a several month detour building the oregon zoo among other projects. Lets begin then!

20221101181457_1.jpg

Starting at the parking lot, we are greeted by this impressive statue of a lion - rex the lion to be precise. A large entry plaza mainly serves as a big area to line up for tickets becuase this zoo gets real busy in summer. We have toilets and atm machines on the left and some nice flower beds to the right - i have not extensively built the parking lot considering this was done before my advanced building in the oregon zoo. Im thinking of properly portraying the area at some point.

20221101181513_1.jpg

Moving along we are greeted by an impressive zoo sign which is accurate to the 2022 rebranding. I know lots of people would recognise the wacky green font but that is in the past. I must note that i did not create the lion statue or lion sign - these were fantastic additions found on the workshop. Lots of ticketing booths can really tell just how busy we could expect the zoo to get. Lets head onwards under the sign into the zoo.

20221101181525_1.jpg

Welcome to front street, as one may guess this is the main street along the front of the zoo which hosts alot of guest related services. I really like the tropical theming which takes a break from my usual northern zoos in north america. We are not going to see many douglas firs or cedar trees here! Directly to the right is one of the zoo gift shops along with a cafe.

20221101181536_1.jpg

A pretty basic gift shop as this was made before the introduction of the gift shop counters, another area i may revisit. As we can see in the background, a small cafe known as the sandwich company - i bet none of you might guess what they sell.

20221101181547_1.jpg

Heading back outside, we see my very first custom made sign whichi think looks great. Its probably the wrong color set but the green and yellow looks really nice. Of course palm trees and extensive use of breeze blocks can be seen. Lets turn around and visit the first habitat here at san diego.

20221101181947_1.jpg

Welcome to flamingo lagoon, this is a fine entrance habitat with roughly 28 flamingo make this sandy lagoon their home. We can view the habitat here or start heading into the monkey trail where the path on the left has plenty unobstructed views of the birds. A set of mud pools and desert rocks simulate the nests in the background. Of course the monkey trail does not exist yet so lack of any trees in the background.

20221101182021_1.jpg

We are now heading left of the entrance now, the front street leads into the wildlife explorers basecamp and reptile walk from here. Above we can see another cafe - the safari kitchen and the hidden jungle java coffee shop right around that tree. We can also see a no entry sign this is a road for the tour buses to drive along bypassing the entire lost jungle zone. We will get to that in the probably far future  We can also see the irl exit path where zoo guests exit from here rather than adding two way traffic in an already busy entrance. A nice big toucan points the way compared to the parrot irl.

20221101182057_1.jpg

Heading onwards , yet another food area this time we have sweet treats and other food/drink shops serving the left portion of the front street. Lots of picnic tables are present here unlike many of the other food options seen here. Of course we cant ignore the massive gondola in the background, why did we get such a big gondola ingame. The marker sign allows guests to easily find the way with lots of markers on each post for both directions.

20221101182237_1.jpg

Lets turn around and prepare the next addition of the walkthorugh - heres the reptile house. Home to lots of exhibits with reptiles like snakes, iguana and much more! Lets continue next time with a tour of this building and maybe some more sights to see around the front street.

(Note that this is a walkthrough of completed content, all viewable from my workshop link on the first post or the link in my signature)

Walkthrough - Reptile House and skyfari station

20221104184732_1.jpg

Contining on front street we have the main exhibit house of san diego zoo - this is the klauber-shaw reptile house. Now obviously the collection ingame features repetition because a lack of temperate/tropical snakes or similar reptiles so quite a few duplicate exhibits had to be made to house the correct amount to fill it up. So heres the reptile house right beside that sweet shack picnic area.

20221104184740_1.jpg

While not exactly much theming here, the building itself is themed off spanish colonial architecture with clean white walls and temple like brickwork - an interesting design which is rarely covered by the community. So we have 16 exhibits here with desert and tropical exhibits covering a wide range of reptiles.

20221104184750_1.jpg

20221104184811_1.jpg

A look at some of the exhibits with above education boards showing each animal. The staff areas in here are behind the exhibits like irl, there is a staff door on one of the sides walls.

20221104185012_1.jpg

Heading back outside, following front street brings us to almost the end of the street. Here we have an event space which is blocked off to guests and entirely scenery.

20221104185046_1.jpg

A view of the end of the front street then - here we have 3 routes to go. One route is straight forward to the wildlife explorers basecamp, this is the new childrens zoo for the san diego zoo where 2 large buildings host exhibits plus 3 modern habitats where we will explore in the next walkthrough. The second route would be to the right with that modern building to our right, this is the komodo dragon habitat along with a static hummingbird habitat walkthrough. Past these two buildings is another habitat zone which is the reptile walk. The last route then would be the skyfari, the zoos gondola system which will take you to the back of the zoo near the polar bear habitat but of course that area is a long ways off.

20221104185055_1.jpg

20221104185115_1.jpg

Heres a quick look at the skyfari station which is way bigger than irl due to the insane sized gondola cars. A rough recreation of the style of the building has been attempted with a looping track to allow a nice two way gondola system using only 2 stations. As with many irl zoos we have sponsored adverts found on the skyfari building which is sponsored by alaskan airlines so i found so generic california centered ads to make it seem real enough.

Walkthrough - Wildlife Explorers Basecamp part 1

Lets have a look at the first of many major habitat areas in the san diego zoo. The wildlife explorers basecamp is the newest addition to the zoo which was completed earlier this year, this is the new childrens zoo and is pretty expansive with lots of cool sights to see. A total of 27 pictures were taken for the walkthrough so 3 posts just for this one area!

20221107141610_1.jpg

Welcome to the wildlife explorers basecamp, this is a really cool entrance which features leafcutter ants and an eyecatching sign. The leafcutter ants were actually easier to make than i thought with just 22 primitive pieces needed to build them and of course one of the large leaf signs. Since this is a modern habitat area lots of this designs are bright and flashy to bring the new childrens zoo to life.

20221107141622_1.jpg

Just past the entrance we are greeted with multiple ways to explore the basecamp, we are going to head into the spineless marvels building first. This building is of course home to insects and leads to the back of the basecamp and winds around the various habitats and even more exhibits if the reptile house and this insect building isnt enough . We can see some of planet zoo's limitations as there isnt a fennec fox or caiman statues here irl - it is small kid friendly models of beetles.

20221107141639_1.jpg

Once indoors, we see a large display of a river scene and lots of butterflies - now i highly recommded to view a youtube video of the real building as a ai generated screen of butterflies in a meadow looks so awesome. Anyways we have 4 insect exhibits spread throughout the building which itself is not fully replicated due to insane exhibit sizes.

20221107141655_1.jpg

20221107141701_1.jpg

It was really fun making the beehive room , i mean its so many pieces but it looks fantastic. The spotlights give the room the orange hue and custom media on the wall showcases the bees. Now i know my interior game isnt the best, but so limited resources indoors means it is hard to fully replicate the building.

20221107141736_1.jpg
20221107141753_1.jpg

20221107141803_1.jpg

Now this is outside the spineless marvels, ahead of us is a binturong habitat which is much larger than irl. Since san diego is a typical zoo meaning some habitats are pretty small way beyond what the game can successfully recognise. This walkway brings us around the binturong habitat and then leads us into the next exhibit building - cool critters.

1667832696530.png

Walkthrough - Wildlife Explorers Basecamp part 2

20221107141811_1.jpg

Cool critters features various reptiles that were not featured in the reptilr house, so these are mainly water based with a couple filler snake exhibits to fill the lack of diverse exhibit options. A interactive table in the middle is geared towards kids with various exhibits on the walls front and beside us to the right.

20221107141830_1.jpg

This was a small exhibit room for the upper level of cool critters, we got another 4 exhibits awaiting on the lower level. So we reach outside again, a quite a few large staff buildings to make this expansive area functional are located here.

20221107141836_1.jpg

Irl features ambassador animal talks occasionally here at the rady ambassador headquarters. Sadly not really functional ingame since we dont really have carry around animal talks.
20221107141847_1.jpg

Turn around though and we get this amazing view of an overview of the lower section of the explorers basecamp. A dwarf caiman habitat is located just below us with the large cool critters building sticking out like a sore thumb. All the way in the back is the fennec fox habitat and even the skyfari station can be seen from here.

20221107141917_1.jpg

Basically at the back of the explorers basecamp now, this is a fake tree right next to the capuchin monkey habitat. Not much nature scenes here as we have a desert like rocky scene that the path will descend all the way down to the bottom. Irl the bottom has quite a few splashpad areas and whatnot to let kids cool off in the warm south california climate.

20221107141935_1.jpg

A better view of the fake tree and capuchin monkey habitat from here. I know it doesnt look the best but i mean making an expansive fake tree without a 1000 pieces isnt the easiest thing to do. Of course we can view the habitat from above by taking either those stairs or the bridge we saw in the last picture.

20221107141953_1.jpg

And here we are at the top of the tree, the bouncy rope area is of course not made here 🤣 Lots of features to entertain kids around about the basecamp but half of them cannot be included since its possible to replicate in any respectable way. Alright lets head back down and go through that tunnel.

20221107142016_1.jpg

So we have now reached the lower section of the wildlife explorers basecamp - on the left we have the dwarf caiman habitat and on the right we have the fennec fox habitat. Lets go left and see the caiman and also visit the lower level of cool critters.

20221107142051_1.jpg

Up close to the caiman in a pretty large habitat for them, this blue walkway goes over the water and can give a really good look at the caimans if they decide to float next to the glass. I dont actually know how many dwarf caiman san diego keeps in this habitat, i got 2 of them since thats the limit - the other caiman can be seen munching down some tasty meat in the background.

1667834072440.png

Walkthrough - Wildlife Explorers Basecamp part 3

20221107142107_1.jpg

20221107142117_1.jpg

Now isnt that cool? Welcome to the lower level of the cool critters building. Here we have only aquatic exhibits with a total of 4 (8 irl but you know HUGE EXHIBITS 🤣) So we got a cool wavy blue lightpattern to mimic the effect we are below the water looking at all the cool aquatic animals.

20221107142129_1.jpg

Exiting the cool critters building we come out under that walkway we viewing the binturong from. From here a closer look can allow some nice views of the binturongs climbing all over their climbing frames.

20221107142151_1.jpg

Another angle of the lower section of the basecamp, just to the right is the last habitat here - the fennec fox. Now the habitat is much different irl since we cant have any rock based habitats for smaller animals, i really wish rocks could be climbable not just hard objects. Also irl has fennec fox along with prarie dogs and burrowing owls. Just fennec fox here so the foxes dont throw a fuss about not enough space

20221107142212_1.jpg

20221107142219_1.jpg

Ah got to love these mesh fences, so annoying to use ingame much like seeing them in real life i guess. So a couple cute fennec foxes run about this desert themed habitat which of course is on the smaller side. Fennec fox picture included because why not

20221107142231_1.jpg

Before we head back up to the upper portion of the basecamp, lets have a look at another one of those children activities. We can see incline needed for san diego, not easy doing these slopes ingame. A couple of climbing ropes and handholds to allow kids to climb up the slope while adults take the path.

20221107142251_1.jpg

Finally finished the wildlife explorers basecamp, up top again is a large picnic bench area for those needing a break after all this walking 🤣. A simple cafe is in the back but i had no references to make it so it is empty inside. While this area took 3 entire posts to cover it - many areas of the san diego zoo are many more times larger.

Walkthrough - Komodo Kingdom / Hummingbird Habitat / Wedgeforth Bowl

20221109155358_1.jpg

Exiting the wildlife explorers basecamp we return to front street, lets head left from here to visit another new section of the san diego zoo.

20221109155414_1.jpg

We have 2 modern buildings in this area which only one features animals ingame. First up is the komodo kingdom, a komodo dragon habitat. As we can see these are some pretty modern buildings with a curved design with lots of glass panels for natural light - yes thats a dwarf caiman statue on the sign since no komodo statue in game.

20221109155429_1.jpg

20221109155434_1.jpg

Sadly we cannot replicate the true building size with a replication of the quite rocky desert enclosure the dragons have irl. The rock hitbox is just way too big for replications. I do like the use of the custom media beach picture paired with the sandy habitat.

20221109155447_1.jpg
20221109155512_1.jpg

We come to the second building here then which is the hummingbird habitat - maybe a possible walkthrough habitat in the future. So this is basically a scenic walkthrough with 2 vista points to attract guests. I might look into adding a couple small birds to at least liven up the atmosphere in here.

20221109155548_1.jpg
20221109155600_1.jpg

One big ......... non functional amphitheater. I really do wish we got proper animal talks where we can have keepers take animals for actual animal demonstrations. Welcome to the wegeforth bowl which irl features alot of animal talk/shows just along from the komodo kingdom building. I added a short video on the big screen so at least something to add to this nice looking scenery piece.

20221109155626_1.jpg

Looking away from the wegeforth bowl, we are behind the reptile house from earlier. 2 empty habitats for i think little tortoises occupy these irl. Lots of outdoor reptiles can be found around here so next time we will visit the last portion of this area of the zoo before walking quite a distance to australia.

Development: - Entrance and parking rework

In between all the walkthrough posts i have been slowly working away at reworking the entire entrance/parking areas due to the old one was just way too small , laughable even for such a big zoo. So what i did was delete basically everything in front of the san diego sign and just rebuilt it all using my improved skills to replicate the area to look a few steps closer to the real thing. Of course with the game scaling it isnt perfect like the parking is way too small to house thousands of cars, i managed to fit in 590 parking spaces

20221110203330_1.jpg

New logo was custom made and looks pretty cool , the lion head is a bitout of shape but it resembles the real thing good enough. New plant areas made with breeze block trims and mulch make the entrance much more lively

20221110203340_1.jpg

Rex the lion gets a makeover with a brand new shadow markings along with a nameplate at the front. A vista point is hidden in a rock so guests can take some pics of the mighty lion

20221110203419_1.jpg

Improved road marking and palm trees make this much more realistic. Red and white blocks note whether you can stop here or not.

20221110203407_1.jpg
New building for the toilet and a new shelter for the self service ticket machines - using atms here for ingame purposes. We can see the entrance plaza is huge compared to the last one

20221110203514_1.jpg

Parking entry here - the road markings make us feel this is an american zoo

20221110203523_1.jpg

I may add some jeeps later on if i feel like having over 500 static jeeps for scenery 🤣. Yes about 590 spaces to use for guests - guest spawn points are also here. Can anyone see them?

Development: Lost Forest - Orangutan Trail

Finally some new animals! but this is also where the zoo gets a little more than difficult to proceed. We can see the below map where the orangutan trail is and all those winding paths to the left and right - all of which go down or up in the case of the monkey trail. To get this totally right i have to slowly plan out which area is going to be easy to build while knowing the exact depth markers for the terrain becuase this is one heck of a canyon to build. Logically the sun bear forest is next giving me the final canyon depth needed to complete the orangutan trail terrain banks to allow the treeline to be made.

map_preview_plan_your_day_10-20-21_0.png

This map makes oregon zoo look really easy, even the extensive front street took weeks to finally figure out the correct elevation marks. Thankfully the fern canyon trail was used to correctly match the irl depth (minus 1 metre). The likes of the owens aviary which is a 2 level aviary with winding paths , i am not looking forward to that in anyway. Anyways lets have a look at the newest animal area in the san diego zoo - the orangutan trail.

Planet Zoo Screenshot 2022.11.13 - 16.08.04.78.png

Birds Eye view of the orangutan trail - highlighted by red circle

Planet Zoo Screenshot 2022.11.13 - 16.00.41.34.png

A look into the monkey habitat, there will be trees behind here once fully finished

Planet Zoo Screenshot 2022.11.13 - 16.02.21.18.png

Now the star of this area - a nice large orangutan habitat. Siamang share the space with a total of 6 animals , 3 of each.

Planet Zoo Screenshot 2022.11.13 - 16.05.47.51.png

The climbing frame is totally a creative addition, looks great that all the animals climb all over it. Sadly the siamang dont seem to swing from angled metal frames

Planet Zoo Screenshot 2022.11.13 - 16.03.22.81.png

A battlle of who is the noisest - is it the 16 flamingoes at the lagoon or 3 siamang screaming on the climbing frame

Planet Zoo Screenshot 2022.11.13 - 16.06.20.87.png

The end of this short trail brings up to a coffee shop - zoobrew. A collection of gift shop stands, picnic tables and palm trees complete this area

Planet Zoo Screenshot 2022.11.13 - 15.49.37.55.png

A look at the zoobrew sign, custom signs like this are not exactly too much of a challenge anymore

A nice small update to the zoo - the fern canyon trail. The fern canyon trail is a short side path linking the lost forest and asian passage via a scenic tropical forest canyon with lots of waterfalls, bridges and of course ferns. To change up the updates, i have a video tour of the trail which also includes the small orangutan trail with some sparse animal sightings

Source: https://youtu.be/qnbVGQLzp7c

Lost Forest: Start of the monkey trail and tiger trail

After finally figuring out the direction and elevation of the start of the lost forest trails we finally expand north of the flamingo lagoon which has sat unattended for the better part of the year. We have 2 trails one at ground level and another up in the trees im sure you can figure out which is which.

Monkey Trail:

20221119164919_1.jpg

The monkey trail starts just to the left of the flamingo lagoon entrance habitat and right next door to the jungle java coffee shop. The trails in the lost forest have these nice sign boards stating elevation difficulty, connecting trails and any key animal species to find along the way. I will actually add more signage than real life becuase it isnt called the lost forest for nothing!

A nice view of the flamingo habitat can be seen here with a little bench area for rest. The wooden boardwalk here is leads all the way into the heart of the lost forest so this trail is a really good one if you want a taster of the lost forest without having to go through the really steep terrain that can be found elsewhere. Also brazil nut trees will be heavily featured in the lost forest since this is completely covered in trees so a nice canopy is needed for much of the trail.

Moving on we leave the flamingo lagoon to reach up into the trees with cool little monkeys hanging above. The monkey trails sign is the entrance piece for each entry point of this area of the lost forest. No animals yet but right below us is a babirusa habitat which will be covered shortly.

So the first habitat for the monkey trail and up to the point of current development is a red ruffed lemur habitat with annoying mesh barriers but lots of climbing frames to see the lemurs from below climb all the way up top. Yes we will have many different kinds of animals here becuase we seem to be lacking monkeys in every single possible way.

Tiger Trail:

Lets jump over to where that orangutan trail starts and turn left - heres the entrance to the tiger trail. The tiger trail is the trail that cuts through the bottom portion of the lost forest to link up to the hippo trail. Quite a while until the namesake habitat appears so lets get started

20221119165053_1.jpg

First up on the tiger trail is a babirusa habitat which is quite spacious with 3 yards covering a 1600m2 habitat. The yards are split using a covered shelter building and a passageway under the path. From the guest perspective we can see 3 yards which is the goal to replicate the seperate habitats like real life.

A relatively bland habitat decorated with bamboo, rocks, lots of dirt amongst our thick tree cover behind. Each tree/bamboo is covered by a barrier which i believe is to stop the babirusa getting a little too cozy with them. Not really a wow habitat considering there will be some far more interesting animals to see along the way , considering zoochat doesnt really cover the habitat which was a challenge in recreating.

And of course we cant forget that the monkey trail is right above our heads, this is be so cool when this area is complete

Lost Forest: Monkey Trail Habitats

Lets continue onwards in the lost forest to the first of very many primate habitats in the lost forest (i know the orangutan trail is already here but lets consider the heart of the lost forest). In this post lets look at the above section of this area otherwise known as the monkey trail which goes to the top of the tree canopy and looks at several expansive monkey habitats tucked in this dense foliage. The dense foliage is used to mimic a tropical rainforest which it does really well.

Lets start again with the start of the monkey trail having just left the flamingo lagoon in the previous post

20221121141834_1.jpg

At the top of this path turn into the lost forest and we can see the tiger trail right below us

20221121141826_1.jpg

The first habitat is a red ruffed lemur habitat which is a substitue of course, i believe it is black and white colobus or similar in real life

20221121141918_1.jpg

Working around the red ruffed lemur habitat we reach the second habitat, a mixed habitat with mandrill and black/white ruffed lemur. These habitats are fully meshed including a custom mesh roof to stop the monkeys/lemurs escaping.
There is also a capuchin monkey habitat to the left at the end of the elevated walkway but i forgot to take a picture from above.

Heres a complete overview of this slighly confusing but really cool layout. Lots of twists and turns makes the lost forest have a well deserved name

Lost Forest: Start of the tiger trail

So we covered the top of the lost forest area here with the monkey trail now lets find out what lies below. As already noted we start the tiger trail by the orangutan trail to begin our downward journey to the very bottom of the lost forest which is be quite the challenge in landscaping.

At the tiger trail entrance with our sign telling us key notes about the trail. Steep terrain is an understatement with whats to come

20221119165053_1.jpg

Up first is the babirusa habitat with its 3 seperate yards as explained in the first post about the tiger trail. We have an elevated walkway here with great views into the habitat

20221119165214_1.jpg

Like the monkey trail at the end of the babirusa habitat we turn inwards to the lost forest. Thats the monkey trail right above us

20221121141524_1.jpg

An impressive replication of a tropical rainforest , the elevated boardwalk ends here to join into the what way do we go?

20221121141542_1.jpg

Thankfully i added clear signs of which trail to follow, real life signs are not as clear using animal shapes to tell you where to go. Thats the red ruffed lemur habitat to the right. If anyone is wondering, these are the aquatic fences

20221121141618_1.jpg

A much better view of the red ruffed lemur habitat from below

20221121141640_1.jpg

Turn around and we are greeted with this impressive tree as the centerpiece of the monkey trail. We go around the tree to reach the mandrill habitat

20221121141656_1.jpg

The mandrill habitat is even more expansive than one may think from the monkey trail, i do really like how the monkey habitats can be seen at both levels
Between the mandrill habitat and capuchin monkeys, there is a elevator and stairs to reach the monkey trail. Lets go past those to see the capuchins

20221121141728_1.jpg

Alright so heres the last part of this post, the capuchin monkey habitat is actually a bit smaller than real life but still just as tall. A nice large climbing frame is used to see the capuchins climb about everywhere in between them screaming off their heads.

1. Great amazing job!
2. How is your computer alive?
Ha actually my computer (a laptop :ROFLMAO: ) is running perfectly fine. Still steady at around 35 fps with the odd dip to 28 in animal heavy areas. Graphics are actually on high aswell which is surprising considering the huge size of the zoo
