Sandro Sammarco: Each Engi upgrade/roll will be better than the next

Sammarco touched on a new way of upgrades to work early in the presentation. IIRC: every time you roll you gonna get a better result.

Will it mean that given enough rolls everybody will be able to receive a God roll? No more RNG?

Edit: sorry Sandro - autocorrect changed your name!

You'd think so, logically. Perhaps a law of diminishing returns .... gets harder and harder to finally get to the end. Not really sure how this will work - we will have to see :)

I expect exactly this. All rolls converge towards the same optimum.

And reduce the range, so the God Roll isnt so absurdly OP. So make it easier to get a more sensible modification, so its more about customization than a mandatory arms-race.

The only way I can see this working is by having a hard cap on what's achievable. So FSD boost hard cap 55%, say, and no possible increase beyond that.

I strongly suspect we may something of the "slider" approach - make "x" better at the expense of "y" - will be delighted if we do.

No, you 'buy' them instead with rep and use mats to re-rep.

>I guess side effects are still fully random, so there's something left to throw material at.

It sounds good. People are rewarded for their efforts rather than infuriatingly wasting their time.

Heard it too hallelujah :)

Having spent approx 3 hours today attempting mat farming for the first time for FSD range improvements, I think it is a good thing :)

Should have been that from the start.

For real. As well as reigning in the range of bonuses so there isn't such a ridiculously enormous performance gap between engineered and non-engineered ships. Bring the skill gap back to combat!
I mean for god sake we're supposed to be tweaking our ships for minor optimisations in some areas at the expense of others, not completely overhauling them to vastly outperform stock versions with no drawbacks.

Surely it's just that every roll will be better than your current module, not that each successive roll will be better than the last roll?

edit - cos that would be silly :)

I'm still shocked by this, TBH.

This seems to be a COMPLETE change in direction from FDEV in respect to the engineers and balancing.

Until now I have never heard from them that they are unhappy with the current engineering system, even though a lot of users are very vocal about it.

I expect it will be a grade 2 roll will always be better then a grade 1 and a grade 3 will always be better then a grade 2 etc.

I just hope this doesnt end up in cookie cutter builds.

One of the good points of engineers is that it gives people unique ships.

It will delight the min maxer brigade and the pvpers.

One caveat though is that it could create a big grind wall to get to the truly optimum builds.
This will then just create something else for the community to attack and complain about.

From what they said I'm expecting what you have is the starting point, worst case roll and the current RNG is then scaled to be at least an improvement but stopping at the max of current limits.
