Sanity Check: Switching from Odyssey to Horizons in 2024

Hey all,

Random one, but just wanted to check. I exclusively play Odyssey, have since it came out. I'm aware there's Horizons (4.0?) and legacy Horizons. My nephew wanted to team up in game - I saw him today and helped him out with some basics on his PC, mouse and keyboard shudder and helped him make his first 200k cr. However, he only has Horizons and I'm pretty sure he's playing 4.0. Are there any potential issue with me installing Horizons and logging in to that to play? Will it cause issues with keybindings and the like, or are they separate? Will installing Horizons now effectively port over any compatible bindings, or will I have to set things up from scratch again?

To be clear, I did of course once have Horizons installed, but I switched to Odyssey pretty much right away, eventually uninstalling Horizons.

I did suggest he (his Dad lol) buy Odyssey as it's currently £9.99 - I suspect that will be easier for everyone as he'll be on the latest version and have access to all the content in theory.

When looking at Odyssey in steam, it's natural to be put off as it's rated "Mostly Negative" currently. However, I do think it's the version to have to ensure he has access to everything the game offers.

If he's playing Live Horizons 4.0 there's nothing for you to install, you can start your game in Horizons 4.0 (Live) mode and if that's what he's playing you'll be able to (barring network issues) instantiate together. If he's still playing Legacy Horizons 3.8 you'd have to install the older client on your PC to instantiate with him. Easiest and access to the most content is as you said if you all play Odyssey, unless his PC is too old to run it well. Also note that any progress made in 3.8 is separated from 4.0, so it's kind of wasted if you care about Odyssey and upcoming content.

Edit: I don't think you should have any problems with keybinds, though you might have the redo the 3.8 ones if you install legacy. The program has 2 sets of keybind files one each for 3.8 or 4.0.

Horizons 4.0 is essentially the same game and engine as Odyssey, it's just that it restricts access to the new Odyssey parts, like landing on atmospheric planets, walking around, etc.

You are a star, sir... Encourage him as much as you might!

@Jack Winter has given ytou the rundown on versions, if he is running 4.0 well now, there is no reason why he couldn't play EDO, but, depending on his PC, some of the foot stuff could potentially run a bit slower.

Previously, when I first installed Odyssey, it was a separate install when using the standard FDev launcher. I had two separate game folders. Some time back, I uninstalled the Horizons build. However, I guess they integrated the two at some point so it was indeed already there.

We ended up teaming up last night for a couple of hours. He was in some random system I'd never been in - seems he missed all the starting area stuff and "special" high-paying mission when planning to leave the area. Dunno what happened there. While I was sat with him yesterday, I showed him how to do some basic courier type missions. He went from 42k to 200k cr so was pretty happy. He was in the totally default starting Sidewinder.

When we teamed up - after I'd gone home obviously - I jumped my Carrier to him, then scouted out some nearby systems for a good Res site to try some bounty hunting in. I brought my Corvette - mainly because I'd not flown it in an age - and showed him how to scan a target and only shoot Wanted ships. I took the lead so any agro was on me, and made sure he got a few good hits in to share the bounty. Before long we'd made over 1 million credits each. Obviously an insane sum to him having been on under 50k cr just earlier that day. He was pretty happy.

With his new wealth, he wanted to buy a new ship, so I took him through the process, explaining each module and what the ratings mean. He got himself a Viper Mk III with mostly D rated modules (speed) and four Multi-cannons. We were going to go for two C2 Multis and two C1 Pulse/Burst lasers but the station did not stock those. He was aware by now of how it's lasers vs. shields and kinetic vs. hull. So, I'd go in first and deplete a ship's shield, then let him take a good chunk out of the hull before assisting again myself. We ended up with over 6 million in bounties to claim. He was pretty happy. At one point, I accidentally collected an escape pod, which of course caused the game to near instantly spawn in a half dozen or so higher level enemies. We'd previously been fighting Harmless / Mostly Harmless pilots - him being Harmless triggering lower-level spawns of course. However, once I had that pod on me, we had some Dangerous and Deadly Pirates appearing. Obviously no challenge for me, but they also didn't bother him, focusing on me, so we took them all down. Getting a 1 million credit payout for just one of those ships was obviously a moment. 20x his prior cash balance in ONE kill. Much joy was expressed when that number popped up.

So, he's learnt all the basics of flight and navigation, can assist kills when bounty hunting and has already upgraded to a new ship. The next step is for him to get himself a basic joystick to use with ED, keyboard and mouse is hard. Thought, to be fair, he's managing better than I likely would - ten years of the same HOTAS with all the same basic mappings, I'm not learning anything new or different lol.

Oh, we got him mapping keys so he can now select me as his primary wing mate and then target my target. Made things a lot easier. The other good news is that he didn't blow up even once, but had quite an explody time previously. ED is so vastly different to the sort of game he's used to, I think he did pretty well.

I expect his next steps might be to enhance his Viper III further, or perhaps buy another ship to tinker with. Give him a ship that means the odd mistake won't be instantly fatal. Needless to say, he's good for a few rebuys.

Quite a fun session.

I was flying along with you in my imagination reading this post!
I remember, a long time ago, the absolute elation in seeing a whole million credits in my bank account... Now I wince at less than a billion...
Great story Scoob, fly dangerously, both of you!

Did another three hour session this afternoon - not sure I have the stamina for this, I don't usually play so long lol - and he's now got a mostly A-Rated Viper III, C1 Fixed Beams (he's good with fixed weapons using KB & Mouse) with a 3C bi-weave. One death, but that was vs. an Elite Anaconda that spawned in, and I was in one of my "fun" ships - aka, not min/maxed and I ran out of Cannon Ammo for hull cracking.

He's sitting on a balance of about 12 million credits now, so he has some good options for his next ship. I might do some EDSY tinkering later - and link him to the tool so he can have a play.
