sap 8 cor container?

there is a mission in the cant do missions, "the silent song of the spheres". The commodity is sap 8 cor containers. Basically it asks you to take these funny look crystal to the lab for further analysis.
is there any other back story to this?

The short answer is that we don't know but there are strong indicators that there is. It may be related to the Unknown Artifact mystery but we have not solved that one yet either.

Not sure if every station has it listed, but many show a buy price of 60K or more (average is 55K).

So they're worth something if you find them.

Myself and a couple of wingmates took this mission over the weekend, you can find the containers in USS carried by large military transport ships such as a Lakon Type 9.
Be prepared to face a LOT of angry escorts mind ;)

There's a big thread about similar artefacts, but attention is now towards the unknown artefacts here, and its focus has now been diverted to seeing how the few that remain are telated to these Sap 8 core containers. The missions require Elite in either trade, combat or exploration, and do mention the Dark Wheel, however. So we know they are involved in the mystery.

Personally, I think they are one and the same: the original contents of the unknown artefact (the core if you like) isolated by the authorities and rehoused in a much more stable and less dangerous container.

Sap 8 could be a codename for a sapient entity for whom the number 8 is significant.... or so whoever named it as such thinks they are.

this is the same type of USS instance that people were finding the Unknown Artifacts. Eventually the artifact would deteriorate the type 9's cargo hatch and fall out, so you wouldn't need to engage the group. I doubt this happens for a crystal, though.
