As one of the founding members of the Sidewinder Appreciation Society (SAS) I feel it behoves me to bring up a topic on the darker side of Sidewinder appreciation. That is, the use of our beautiful little ship to commit suicide so as to travel instantly back to the bubble.

While I am sure that this has been going on since the beginning of the Elite Dangerous universe, with the advent of stations and colonies well beyond the bubble (e.g. Colonia) this practice has ramped up considerably.

I am sure Faulcon Delacey appreciates the continued purchase of their ships, but I am guessing they never envisaged this use for them. Maybe they could invent an even cheaper version with just the Sidewinder frame and no FSD and minimal thrusters (only enough thrust to move the ship away from the station). The Faulcon Delacey Sidewinder Self Destruct Capsule anyone?

If you're interested, you can join the Sidewinder Appreciation Society (even if you only use the Sidey to travel great distances instantly) here:

Safe travels Cmdrs. May you use your Sidey honourably.

Well why would I use a Sidey as an exploration vessel in the first place? For for ASP or DBE, do the 5k ly grind run for engineers, suicide and safe 5k ly more for just one million credits. With a sidey and its jump range I would need twice as much so I just could fly back with a real exploration vessel in the same time.

Sidewinders are good at clearing bounties, tho. Or to stop people from speeding :p I don't do that but I think it's fun :D

I did it in the last Beta if that counts. The beta starts you a week or so behind your current progress. That's all well and good but it meant that my ship was in the middle of nowhere. I suicidewindered so that I could get back to the bubble in time to try out all the new fancy goodies.

I also don't know if this counts as well. I want to get people together for a joust of inconsequential fighting using Suicide Sidewinders...

We actually held the duel a light jump away from Cleve Hub. The duel didn't go well for me and so I yelled "Yield!" before the inevitable death. But I thought of all the time it would take me to get back to the station (maybe 3 or four minutes), and the mere pittance death would cost. I just let myself get blown up instead.

I don't think you understand Cmdr. When people want to get back to the bubble from Colonia they store their main ship (be it an Asp or Conda etc) and buy a sidewinder. Then they take the sidewinder and self-destruct, taking the option to get a new sidey in the bubble rather than the insurance rebuy. That way they instantly get back to the bubble at only the cost of a basic sidey.

Now, let me tell you about using sideys for exploration. They are awesome! Jump range may be a little on the low side (22ly max pre-engineers) and they can't hold much but they are good enough to get you across the galaxy and back. See my voyage logs in my signature ;).

Sounds like fun...another great use for a sidey. I will definitely check out your thread. If you haven't already done so you might also post it in one or both of the SAS threads I mention in the OP.
