Hello Fellow Commanders,

I am honoured to announce, based on the initial idea of commanders Sickma and Frawd Digger, the instigation of the "Sidey Appreciation Society".

We think that the sidewinder is one of the most under-appreciated ships in the galaxy. And that it is about time to spread some love!

We all started in one. Most of us tried to get rid of one in favour of a "better" ship (including yours truly), but we all, at some point, have returned to it (either voluntarily or by, ehrm, financial circumstances). We should abide in this little ship, which is suitable for any role you trhow at it, being bounty hunter, warrior, trader, miner, explorer and (yes) even pirate.

This thread can be used to genarally state your fondness of the Sidey, organize Sidey related events and meet other Sidey pilotes. You can also apply to join the "Sidey Apprciation Society" (henceforth known as the SAS) by replying to this thread stating that you want to be a member (for details see below in "SAS Membership").

We're also an in-game group now! Visit the Sidewinder Appreciation Society thread in the groups forums for more information. Over time that thread will probably take over the function of this thread, but don't worry, this thread will still be here to service you (both for historical purposes and to refer you to the new thread).

Fly safe,
CMDR Jermus

SAS Membership
On applying please specify your commander name (and preferably also your forum name). You can also state your ship's name and provide some text that we can add to the "Remark" field; as long as they are not offensive by the standards of this forum they will be copied into the member list.

And spread the word, even non-forum members will be accepted as members of the SAS: They can read this thread for information about upcoming events, while safely remaining only known in-game. We will even accept you as a member without being listed, as long as you fly a sidey and act nice. Most certainly the pirates among you are welcome too, but please show some love for your fellow Sidey pilots by refraining from illegal and unwanted activities while attending SAS events (i.e. don't shoot us!).

Sidey Achievements
Below a list of achievements made with a Sidey:
name achievement notes
CMDR R4nger0 First sidewinder to cross the galaxy (58.000 LY from SOL)
CMDR Frawd Digger First sidewinder to reach Beagle Point (65.279 LY from SOL) honourary mention for the Rock Rats, who helped to make this possible!
CMDR SickMa Reached SAGITTARIUS A* in a sidewinder Exploring from August 2015 to April 2016; more then half a year. Scanned detailed about 30.000 Objekts in about 3500 Systems.
CMDR Dormus The rescue of CMDR Bomba Luigi The resque consisted of CMDR Dormus carrying CMDR Bomba Luigi in his SRV on top of the sidwinder from the depths of an extremely deep pit to safe (and flat!) grounds. Unfortunately for CMDR Bomba Luigi this was only a partial rescue, as poor CMDR Bomba Luigi still didn't have a ship after this epic achievement.
CMDR Nerth Made it to Sag A* on the 16th of November 3301 and made it back to the bubble just after Christmas (3301) EXO Pilot
CMDR Karuv Made it of Sag A* on the 13th of November 3301. CMDR is mainly active on reddit (and in game, we hope...)
CMDR Jermus Second sidewinder to reach Beagle Point (65.279 LY from SOL)
...
You? ... a story to be told ... to be heard by many ... What are you waiting for?

It suspect many will soon be reaquainting themselves with the slippery lil Sidey, based on Newsletter #120:

"For those using smaller ships, in particular the Sidewinder, Faulcon de Lacey have introduced performance enhanced size 2 and 3 drives. Incredible fun for racing, they also give Commanders an extra bit of zip that can make all the difference in a dangerous encounter."

I wonder if the Cobra MKIII will get better drives? Or the Viper MKIII?

Holy cow those things can shift as it is. If you get a drive that makes them even faster, they'll be practically uninterceptable. It'll be like "Stand and deliver!!! - Your cargo or your............oh, he's gone....."

Based on the wording, it sounds like all ships that use C2 or C3 drives, so Viper Mk III yes, Cobra no.

/my guess

I want to like the Sidey, but I have deep built in hatred for it, from when I was traumatized as a young budding commander.

After finally purchasing my first "big" ship the Python, I was taught a lesson in Haz that an E/D rated Python isnt the incredible hulk. Barely escaping with my life, a bit shaken I had an unfortunate accident of slightly clipping the docking bay entrance. Personally I think it was questionable as there was lots of room, or at least after having 6 beers it look like it :) At this point I was quite angry with myself, as I knew the dreaded re-buy wouldnt be cheap. But I only though I was angry, as I didnt realize the last module I upgraded pushed me just over my rebuy limit. Now I knew what real anger felt like and the thing making me angry kept looking back at me, it was the Sidewinder!!

Would you like a free Sidewinder? Noooo!! I dont want a damn Sidewinder! Where is my Python! But the Sidewinder just kept looking back at me, mocking me.. I hate that thing.

I've restarted my game save a half dozen times since Gamma so I've spent a fair share of time inside the cockpit of the Sidewinder.

It is a great ship! In one of my game saves I was able to earn a cool 10 million credits in the first couple hours of gameplay inside a High Security RES. Taking down Anacondas by maintaining cover behind an asteroid and taking pot shots. Helps to have plenty of Sys Auths around to help of course.

I've restarted my save half a dozen times too. I love the little Sidey. I was an early backer, so I get to own an Eagle too, but I sell it to upgrade the loaner Sidey, rather than starting out in the Eagle.

Restarting with every ship destruction (self imposed IronMan) I've really grown to appreciate the Sidey. An A-rated Sidewinder is a joy to fly, but even that loaned one is fun.

Got an account I use for testing which gets restarted every other week or so. It's one of the most enjoyable things to do. Bombing round the starter system in Sidewinder, mining the asteroid belt in LHS 3447. No worrying about dangers, what's the worst that can happen!

And all the time I've got my packed lunch neatly wrapped up to my right hand side - Sidewinder heaven :)

Could you please add my comrade in arms :-

Cmdr Name: Waldovenison Smeare
Forum Name: Can be connected Via Iron Orchid
Ship Name: The One-Armed Badger

He's currently in the bubble try to scratch a living buying and selling Biowaste!

Having played in 84 (not very well) I knew this was going to be a difficult game. For that reason I stayed in my sidey (Little Lily), with the standard fixed weapons until I learned how to fly & fight. Went through many Little Lilys on my journey. I even tried exploration (very few systems back then).

Very fond of the Sidewinder, still jump in her with fixed weapons from time to time. With the new upgrades coming it should make her virtually untouchable if you know what you're doing. She can be lethal in the right hands (not necessarily me)

I would like to apply for membership.

Cmdr Angua von Uberwald

Ship name Little Lily

Edit: Just watched video, brilliant.

I think it's 1m credits for a top spec Sidey. Always yworth having one around, will be interested to see the top speed with the new drives.

I still like flying sidewinders in CQC.

By the way, that video was great!

Hmm, totally forgot about CQC. Have to check CQC to see if I'm already allowed to fly a sidewinder. Might be fun to have a SAS CQC event... Thanks for reminding :).

And about the video: you should also watch his other video's, he has made more commercials (whether you think they also are great I'll leave up to you to decide ;)).

Fly safe,
CMDR Jermus

That's about how I made my first million as a bounty hunting sidewinder pilot :). Come to think of it, this asteroid hiding could have saved me a couple of re-buys  (mental-note-to-self...).

Tell me where I can find you guys. I wanna make you all PoP!!!
