Save a destroyed ship until you can pay your insurance costs

I see too many people leaving the game from being forced to take a freewinder and losing everything. You buy and outfit a brand new Anaconda, and you're so excited about it that you forget about your rebuy costs, then your new ship takes the big one and you can't pay the insurance claim.

My solution: If you can't afford the rebuy, your destroyed Anaconda should be "stored" while you take the freewinder and work up your credit balance. Once you have enough credits, you'll pay the insurance claim and get your ship back.

If FD wanted a system with no risk involved, one would already be in place. This risk of losing a ship is obviously one of the basic foundations of Elite, so I doubt there will be a significant change. Actually there has already been a change as you can now pawn other ships when destroyed but that is just the game acknowledging their worth at rebuy.

Forget your rebuy costs? For a Conda? Ok I can understand a beginner forgetting rebuy cost for early ships, Cobra Mk 3, but by the time you get to a Conda you should have been playing long enough to a) not forget about rebuy or b) be aware of the risks of flying without rebuy and accepting the results.

This is what you get with the endless demands for easy money I guess. People who have heaps of money to buy stuff but don't actually know much about playing the game. The money earning potential of the game should be aligned to make sure that by the time you can afford to buy a Conda you are already familiar with the mechanics of the game.

No thanks. Part of what makes the Game work is the Risk/Consequence interaction. If you choose to take out a ship without enough to cover a REBUY and are then unfortunate enough to lose it you will (if you are intelligent enough) learn from this for next time.

You can do this already - but your means of earning money are of course limited without a ship.

1) When you get the rebuy screen, quit the game. If you log back in to Open, PG or Solo, you'll be back at the rebuy screen, so don't do that.

2) Log into Arena - this is not restricted.

3) Play matches until you can cover the rebuy. (Your earnings are highest at rank 50, so stick there rather than prestiging and you'll get money a lot faster)

4) When you have enough money - 1 million credits/week is certainly possible if you're on PC and play a lot - log back into the main game and rebuy your ship.

Yeah 3 years in I'm still working on this myself. If there's one thing that ED doesn't do is balance risk / consequence.

Loitering = death penalty.
Murdering = 1000cr fine.

This is altogether another gigantic threadnought, for another time :)

The game should be more verbose about attempting to take a ship out with inadequate cash to recover the loss though. Then it's about choosing to take the risk vs accidental oversight. One cannot fault choice.

I didn't say FDev had got it right! However, if I decide to head into a highly dangerous situation I have to choose which ship I can afford to lose! My Anaconda has a REBUY of around 20Mcr, while my Federal Gunship has a REBUY of 4Mcr. I hope I am not going to have to cover the REBUY, but I assume I have a high chance of doing so.

Alternatively, just pop a warning about insufficient credits to cover rebuy either on purchasing/outfitting or on launch.
Make it a toggle so those who don't need hand holding can turn it off.
