Saving the game and options.

All over the forum players mention how they solve things between Open play and Solo play by 'clearing the save'. What is that? I never get such option in the main menu. Only 'Save and exit to Main Menu' and 'Save and exit'.
Although I noticed at my friends game he got this option instantly after leaving a simple Training session and could clear it.
My question is if there are two types of game clients out there or do I need to do something to activate this 'Clear Save' feature, so I can use it too?

Don't do this...

Clear Save deletes your commander and starts you at the beginning again, ie with a sidewinder and 1000cr.
