At the risk of sounding stupid . How do you stay safe when you save the game floating in space ?
Saving while out in deep space

Hit esc, then select Save and Exit 
Simple as that. Your instance is removed, and you are perfectly safe.

There once was an issue where if you logged off in an asteroid ring, you could respawn on/in a rock and be destroyed. That was fixed.
Me, I prefer to take the RP extreme by finding an asteroid with no or very little rotation...extending landing gear and land on the surface...i then shut everything down except life support and then log off.
But, you don't need to do that
