scanner... linear / logarithmic

while perusing my menus, (fuel scooping in the DBx has you doing some curious things) i noticed the scanner, and logarithmic and linear, it dont appear to make a difference, a previous post from Feb 2015 alluded to it doing pretty much nothing in SC either, but that may be outdated?

being away from other ships too and only just finding this button.. does it only effect npc / player icons and distances on the radar screen?

in supercruise and such distances are so great that it really doesn't make much difference.

However it does make a difference for when you are not in supercruise, allowing you to better see and notice asteroids in a ring, but depending on how you prefer to read it, you can change mode accordingly, some navigate better with one, others with the other.
