Scanner Scale

Commanders,

Maybe I'm missing something here and if so, please point me in the right direction, but I remember in older (much older) versions of the game the scanner was very easy to read at showing which ships were close by and which ones where far away, but I'm having great difficulty in being able to differential the relative distances with the current scanner. I have tried both the linear and logarithmic display but found both to be equally... difficult to read and get a gauge of the relative distances to other ships.

For example, I was following my wingman quite closely but he appear as far away on the scanner as he did when he was 100's ls away. When on missions, I would often get buzzed by NPCs desperate to tell me something and their ship would fly by quite closely, but their icon on the scanner would flit from one side to the other. Is there some way that targets that are truly local to me are shown as being quite close, and those much farther away as being at the edge of the scanner? I think it might help if the various zoom factors had definite ranges as opposed to just being different scales of the whole system. Am I being obtuse, or is this just 'one of those things to get used to'?

Thanks

Your scanner in SC is based on travel time at current speeds to blip - so speeding up or slowing down changes relative distance.

Tracking moving targets using scanner in SC is... Really hard to the point of insanity. I would use it as more of a relative heading indicator.

For non SC movement, I'd recommend heading to a RES and just make a game of flying between the NPC miners for a bit using the scanner for navigation as much as possible - that's what I did and it worked much better than any guides or manuals. Now I feel pretty comfortable with my situational awareness from the scanner at a glance, but it did take some getting used to for sure.
