Horizons scanning a data beacon from my ship

Sorry if this turns out to be in the list of shortcuts and/or the manual, I'm really missing it.

I'm trying to scan a private data beacon in space. I do not find any shortcut or button in the keyb binding list to do that.
My ship does not have any weapons. I'm reading through the articles and I have this dark brown feeling that it has something to do with it. They all refer to scanning from the SRV, but I have no problem with that.

If I select that data beacon and then go to the sub-targets panel I get this infinitie "retrieving scan data" animation. Bug? Any has a way to get me to scan this data beacon anyway?

If you mean the data beacons you find in uss's then you just point your ship at it, and the scan commences. It completes in just a few seconds.

I would expect that. But it doesn't. Do I need a planetary surface scanner, or is this ust because I do not have any weapons installed?

You need a scanner. Can be basic, intermediate or advanced. Nothing to do with the surface scanner though.

The other one. Unexpected, since that is a stellar body scanner. I would expect this to be basic ship functionality. Now I understand. Thanks!

You must target the beacon and be pointed directly at it or it will mot be scanned.

No, you don't need a scanner other than the one built into your ship. You just have to target the beacon and point your nose at it. And have room in your data.
