Newcomer / Intro Scanning and Discovery

After a few years away giving it another go.
Scanning, it seems to have changed since I last played, I know this probably has been asked ALOT, I've read a couple of things but it's not making sense.
  • Is there still a scanner that can identify a whole system? (I never got to find/buy one that last time) Instead what I'm doing at the moment which means flying up to everything.
  • Where can you buy one?

On a side note, is there any chance of finding a system that hasn't been discovered?

Look in your right-hand UI - pilots handbook - tells you all about the exploration systems now.

Basically you have a built-in discovery scanner - it has a passive detection range of 30ls - you use the FSS to scan the waveforms to reveal what bodies are there and then if you want you can go to a body and map its surface using your DSS probes. FSS scan of a body is like the old detailed surface scan - mapping is more exhaustive and hence more rewarded.

Here is a quick video I made showing the use of the FSS (there are other much better, more polished videos out there):

I see a ninja has appeared. ;)

You need a discovery scanner which you use to "honk" the system you arrive in. This is assigned to a fire group. This will show the bodies in the system but not details about thpse those bodies. To get greater detail, you use the "FSS" - full spectrum system scanner. Both modules should be fitted to your ship automatically.

To glean even greater detail, use a detailed surface scanner.

Details here:

EDIT: Ninja'd!

As they say arriving in a system finds the star you jumped in at automatically as well as anything really close, honking gets you the whole system, using the FSS gets you everything in the system to the level of the old detailed surface scanner and all of that capability is built in you just need to adjust a lot of control bindings.
If you fit the new DSS, if you had an old one it will have evolved into the new one, you can fly up to bodies and rings and map the for even more information, again controls to be bound.

Almost all of the galaxy is now undiscovered so your chances are extremely good, they are better away from the bubble especially in directions heading towards nothing famous or interesting but even in the bubble you can find some stuff.

Honking doesn't actually get you the whole system, as was. If you jump into a previously undiscovered system (or a previously visited system with undiscovered bodies), the honk will not show those. You could jump into a system with 10 bodies (and the honk will say that) but you might only see 1 (the main star) on your scope and on the left panel. Using the FSS makes other bodies "visible" to you.

Also, ships default to "combat mode"; you need to change modes to use the discovery scanner and the FSS.
