Horizons Scanning Data Points at Quince

I must be a complete moron...

So I hear that scanning data points on Kosmala in the Quince system is lucrative. Following a guide I found on Reddit (and many frustrating hours later) I finally managed to find the outpost where the data points are located. I land, I drop my SRV, and carefully make my approach (since these places seem to always be guarded by murderous security ships).

I get to the data point, press the button I have assigned to the scanner (main fire button, as I assigned it in the options menu AND the fire group)... and nothing happens. That is until I start getting shot at by the security ships, who have thus far killed me every time as I try desperately to get back to my ship and fly away.

So my question is this: How the &*%# do you scan a data point?! I've looked all over for the answer and nothing works. I'm just trying to make some money for a change and this one little thing is holding me back. How do you do it without getting killed first? How does it work AT ALL?

Someone please help me with this. [knocked out]

you have to target the node when you do the scan, however usually its easier to to use the turret mode, because the target will lift up into the air when you approach said data point.

Actually, the training mission is what showed me the problem. It seems that no matter what button I set the scan to, it is by default the C button on my X52.

Go figure. Thanks for your help :)

Accept missions..
Set Nav to to the planet
Exit station
Hyperspace to planet
As you near planet slow down
Eventually a mission update will come in and the base station is targetable, target it.
If it's blind to you (other side of planet) navigate so it's visible.
Enter planetary orbit,
Enter Glide all the while pointing to wards the target.
The target will move upto about 6 times in the course of the planetary approach and the glide and the ensueing travel to station.
Eventually, it will change to the actual station or camp or whatever it's called. (done so many it all so routine now)
as you near the camp, locate the building with the gun to the right. The building has a numeric designator.
Plan to land near it..
Land, and deploy SRV
Once in the SRV, dismiss ship. This will save/help you. 1. If you get kilt, you'll end up back in orbit in your ship. 2. There are some friendly commanders roaming around who'll try to kill you or your ship, for sh*ts and giggles. If you've dismissed your ship, they can only kill you..
Ok, so in SRV head tot he building with the writing and just to the right of it is an entrance to the camp and to the right of that a big gun.
You should also noting a red perimeter.. Once you cross this, the skimmers wake up and come out to say Hi.
As you enter the camp, building to your left, you notice a tower type thing. It wakes up and an aeriel extend from it.
Enter SRV turret mode and target the aeriel.
It will pop up a little note.. Private or Public access.
To actually scan on my x52, its the thumb fire button. Depress and hold it until you get the Mission update.
Immediately reverse out the way you came in and you'll get the perimiter cleared message.
You can now do a few things.. Let the skimmers attack and kill you, or recall your ship and board it and leave the planet.

A few things to note;
If you're playign in 'Open' - Beware of players who are ganking anyone doing missions, killing them and havign a greta ol laugh. Some of them are attacking your ship in orbit as you travel to/from planet, and other attacking ships on the planet.

Also in Open, other commanders may actually perform the scan, which seems to update everyone with missions already near or on the planet surface. This saves you having to land.

If you are in Open, are on the ground and about to scan, notify on comms... That way anyone incoming to scan can let you scan and get the updates. Believe me, at some point it'll all work in your favour.

Some missions require you to scan both the public and private terminals. So far Ive found scanning 2 of any type works.

Major POI...
Quince is totally f*cked as is the mission system. Expect any and all kinds of problem. Some of the quirks Ive encountered. Crash to black screen after scanning, Crash to black screen when entering supercruise. Crash to black screen when disengaging to the station. Crash when dropping landing gear.

This does not include the dreaded 'Mission Failed' fiasco which you can read about elsewhere. The best way around this I have found is to keep accepting missions,, kill the failed ones and carry on. It's not proven either way if you lose rep, but mine is so high it makes no difference.

Some of the missions reward cargo items. Sell it asap. You will get interdicted by NPCs for it. Which just lengthens the time taken.

You can also, perform the Sidey Suicide. Buy a sidey, add a plenetary hangar and srv, get missions, go to camp, and scan and then crash the sidey into the camp. You'll lose ship and end up back at station. pay for new sidey, hand in missons and claim your loot.

Lastly; Quince missions give Empire faction... When you reach the 100% level you'll be offered a Naval Ascenion mission. It'll be a smuggling mission to some place 300-400 lys away. I ignored them and just kept adding to my rep. Eventually I went and gained I think 5 ranks in one afternoon running the naval missions.

Hope this helps
