Scanning Sanchez-Class Science Vessel in Ross 775 causes game crash

Im creating this post to post about a potential bug.

In Ross 775 is a megaship, Sanchez-Class Science Vessel. When attempting to Data Link scan this ship, the game crashes. I have updated drivers and restarted the pc, no change.
 
Same here, at Parcae, crash when trying to scan the Bowman-class Researcher megaship.
Additionally, no megaships to find in nearby systems although Inara says so (e.g. in Theta Ursae Majoris or LHS 229).
 
I have experience this CTD event on at least 5 megaships in different systems. I have submitted the crash reports when the software offered them. Let's see what happens. In the meantime I have to try to remember not to scan when I drop in... 🛑
 
This has indeed been happening, I had it a lot at first, however there is a way to get around it. It happens if you start scanning when you first jump in, that is you just got within 10kms and immediately start scanning, then crash. With some experimentation I found if you fly in and approach the station to a distance of around 3kms and scan it will work every time, haven't had a crash since I started doing that.

I surmise that it is an issue with asset loading, some of the scannable assets haven't finished loading, maybe due to the load on the servers due to the colonisation gold rush, and flying in to 3kms gives the assets time to load. So try this method and see how you go.

Possibly related to the effect applied to the surface of megaships when they're being scanned. Graphics draw distance or other quality settings may change the behaviour.
