Scared the holy crap out of me

Ok last night I was coming into final approach of a planet heading for the surface station. I had just clicked over to planetary flight hud when I was interdicted.

Now this close to the planet the escape vector tends to make you head towards the planet regardless, only you are going a pretty fast SC speed still. I expected the planet to knock out my FSD drive as it usually does if you fly too close to it too fast, but nope. Not this time.

The planet surface very quickly got very large. I could see the surface and mountains and was pretty certain that in a second I would pancake the ground. The screen filled with beige and then bang!! I slammed down my hands on the desk and prepared for the rebuy screen only to see that the FSD had shut down and thrown me out of SC 140m from the planet surface and cost me 1% hull for the FSD drop.

As the ship sat there hovering I just breathed for a while wondering what the hell had just happened. The dust was blowing up around me and I could see all of the surface rocks on the ground.

I never realised that you could even fly those speeds that close to the surface and I certainly thank the space gods for getting my ship back into normal space before the ship ended up as a cloud of metallic dust particles scattered over the ground. I had ended up 4.63Mm from the station I was headed for but was more thankfull that it wasn't 0m from my last docked one.

Fly safe out there CMDRs!
