Scared to even try to play after first 2.1 experience

I hadn't played ED in months and decided to come back to check out 2.1 and Engineers. I had 1.3 million credits and an FDS. I got interdicted by an NPC trying to do my first mission I thought no problem I'll just boost out shooting chaff, activate my FSD, and get out. By the time my FSD was off cooldown though it was disabled and I had no shields and 29% hull. I got blown up and lost 1 million credits.

Now I'm nervous about even trying to play because if I get blown up again in my FDS I will lose it. I don't know if I should do what some are doing and start a fresh file to relearn the game from the start or what.

Are they going to adjust the difficulty? If not I'll probably restart from scratch because I'm not good enough to deal with this anymore :(

Time to downgrade :)

Yes, you will have to git gooder. But it's not at all impossible. I was quite frustrated, too, but I watched some videos, read some advice, and started reflecting on how prior to the patch I was just cake-walking all over the galaxy without having to put any kind of effort into it. And in the past week, putting that effort in has kept me alive and well paid.

Stick in there, and don't lose heart :)

As an added tip, operating in high security areas whilst you teach yourself some new tricks can make a big impact on your survivability.

Even in 2.0 flying around with 1.3 million in the bank was an ungood idea in anything bigger than an Eagle or a Viper.

So yes definitely sell your FGS and buy a more "Total Assets" appropriate ship ;)

Small agile ships with enhanced drives are a good place to start. Extremely fun, cheap, and they all come with a "get out of jail free" card: speed! :D

Good advice above.

Change ship to something you can afford to loose, then work an area of space to up your rep to get better paying missions and relearn the ropes.

Issues with engineers aside, the buff to the other parts of the game have made it much better, if somewhat more dangerous.

And going off what Ziljan said -- I have plenty of credit to insure my T-6 over and over, but I'm about to hop into some sidewinders and eagles so I can practice dogfighting without significant financial impact. I'm actually looking forward to it :)

Same thing happened to me, basically. I loaded the game up for the first time in a while and found myself in the cockpit of my Clipper with its 3million rebuy. In addition to having been out of the game for a while I was playing with a new controller and needed to acclimate to the new button layout. I had heard the AI was brutal so I figured the safest thing to do would be try some practice maneuvers outside the station, then fly to one of my "home" systems and switch to one of my cheaper ships for a while.

Well, I undocked from the Coriolis station and flew out of the mail slot without incident. I then brought the ship to a halt just a short distance outside the station and started fiddling with ship functions, lateral thrusters, etc, getting a feel for ship handling. A message came over the comms which was something to the effect of "let's get him fellas," and the next thing I know there are multiple NPC ships firing at me. I fumble with the controls and do my best to boost away, charge the FSD, etc; but basically everything goes wrong and once they dropped my shields, the module malfunction alerts started popping up and then my FSD fails. Two new blips appear on my radar: missiles incoming. And we'll, that was the end of me. 3million+ rebuy (fully 1/3 of all my funds), and I barely made it out of the station.

Eventually I managed to take my replacement clipper and make an exceedingly tense 7 jumps to my home station, but not without getting interdicted several times and nearly getting destroyed in one of the resulting encounters. I made it into the station with 50% hull remaining, and promptly put the ship into storage, opting instead to fly the much more affordable Cobra for a while.

p.s. - no there was no bounty on my head and to the best of my knowledge I was still within the no-fire zone of the station (I was close enough to be mass locked by it anyway). I was however pledged to a PowerPlay power which is probably why I was attacked.

I've been flying mu Cobra III. Versatile, can carry a SRV and some cargo, good for materials grinding and mission running, and cheap to replace.

Play the Combat training missions, should be the same AI
Granted you wont be in your FDS but you might get a feel for it.

Many are reporting to commit suicide due to these wonderful new NPCs. The AI it seems cant be all that and a bag of chips if they have to stretch the coding limits for them to keep up to us CMDrs in base run of the mill mods. But anyways, ive never played a game including the old MUDs wherein players are self inducing a player wipe. Its astonishing.

With appropriate choice of ship you can forget what a rebuy screen looks like. I haven't seen one since around new years. ;)

It sounds like the OP actually wants to reset, so it's all kind of moot now, but... My strategy in this situation (if a shipyard is actually available where you are) would be to keep the FDS instead of losing the depreciation by selling it. If your rebuy is a million you're going to lose about another million selling it. Just use what funds you have left to get a cheap eagle or sidewinder to go out and build up funds again from there. You can sell one or two easy to replace parts like your ADS for some extra temporary funds. Then you can return to your FDS at some later time.

Fly something else until you are comfortable with the game perhaps? Something cheaper...
