Scavenging: Is it worth it?

Is scavenging worth the time it takes to gather stuff up and find a station to sell the...less-than-legal loot? And by scavenging I mean of course the act of dropping into USSes and scooping up all that conveniently left behind cargo. Just figured it might be something I might try after trading got boring and I had a nice ship I was happy with for a while, just wanted to know what the profits were like for it...if anyone else has tried this method out?

It's free money, and if you have an outpost with a black market it's pretty low risk. It's usually not awesome, considering the volume of goods usually, and the fact that you have to evade the authorities in any future USS until you sell the cargo.

The profits are nowhere near trading and becomes equally boring. It is however, free money. If you do consider it, pick up missions that have you go find them. Not only will they pay you more than the black market, but the USS' that contain the items are more likely to spawn.

Clear answer : No.

Reason : Risk/Reward Ratio is about 100:1. Reputation loss is insane if you get caught smuggling, far bigger than even for murder.

The only exception would be if you have an unguarded Outpost with a Black Market. Then you might loiter close to that outpost and check out USS.
But beware - you'll encounter many USS with Clean/Police Ships Scanning scenario... You'll need a ship that's able to get out of there very fast again.

Anarchy is another option to lower the risk, as would be an independent system whose rep you don't care about tanking.

Well given that I was planning on traveling to some place like an Anarchy system...or some place in an Alliance space I don't think the rep would be that big of a deal for me :p but good to know that it'd be best to find an outpost with a BM before trying this.

So thanks for the replies and the input! I'll have to think seriously on my future job change (again)

Yes it is just like watching an episode of firefly.

You...I like you. I mean I'm sure you're lying and are saying that off the quotes in my sig. But I like you none-the-less :p

It's worth it if you know what you are doing. When you have illegal goods do everything to avoid getting interdicted because it is a pain if it's Federal ships that interdict you and scan you. Just don't get scanned and you can make some decent money doing it. If it is something lame like Grain I usually avoid it but sometimes I find valuable items floating around like I think prototype tech is usually worth a decent amount.

My playstyle is to fly around on the edge of space in my Cobra and explore systems, scanning, and then picking up cargo. Sometimes it is difficult to find a black market though and you have to be ready, if you get into one of those big tetrahedral floating stations to line yourself up with the letterbox, close your landing gear and go as fast as you can out so you don't get scanned. Getting in is more difficult - hope that somebody isn't going to come in with a giant ship when you are doing it because that can screw everything up. When you are going balls out to get into the station, be ready to pop your landing gear and do everything you can to stop your ship, I banged my ship up pretty good crashing into the other side once.

I like using the Cobra because it has a pretty solid amount of cargo space and it can go pretty fast, so I can usually outrun trouble.

This game really isn't about what's efficient or making the most money IMHO. It's about having fun and I have fun smuggling stuff. I have fun exploring. If you have fun doing those things, do them. If you don't or you are scared of consequences, don't do it.
