Scenery /culture representation

One of the more important part of planet zoo is the scenery. After the Oceania pack I noticed that Oceania as a whole had two scenery theme representing different cultures (aboriginal/ Polynesian) so I wanted to go down a rabbit hole and see what scenery/ cultural architecture is missing from the game. The focus of this thread isn’t necessarily important scenery for zoos it’s more about representing the vast cultures of this Earth along with its wildlife.

North America: 1 set (New World: Base Game)

The new world set is more generic in nature. More representing, modern, minimalist, sleek, American architecture.

What we need: I think NA needs more scenery based off the vast cultures of the pre colonialism Native Americans. Some Pacific Northwest First Nations scenery, or Southwestern Pueblo Peoples Architecture. Going into the post colonial styles you could add log cabin theming or Wild West style theming as well. Overall I think North America is the most lacking when it comes to scenery representation in game

South America: 1 set (South American: SA Pack)

The SA pack gave us a vaguely generic Meso American temple set with some bamboo pieces reminiscent of some of the vast architectural style in the tropical rainforest regions of the continent.

What we need: I think that the SA pack was on the right path but vastly missed the mark and a modern scenery pack would’ve done meso American architecture it’s justice. Actually having architecture based on the Mayans, Inca, and Aztecs would’ve been vastly superior than just having the general vibe of it. I also believe South America is in desperate need of a Latin American set showing the vast amount of architectural styles from central to South America. Picture colorful buildings and latin towns from the post Colonial era. This would help represent the cultures that inhabit South America. Another continent that is truly lacking when it comes to scenery.

Europe: 3 (maybe 4) sets (Arctic: Arctic Pack, Europe: Europe Pack, Twilight: Twilight pack, [Classical?: Base Game])

I debated putting the classical set on here or not. It represents a lot of the classic architecture of early European zoos, so I left it up to choice if you want to include it into Europe or not. The Arctic pack gave Europe good Nordic representation in the form of it’s dark wood, Norse-esque theming. the Europe pack gave a lot of the modern cultures of Europe fair representation in the form of scenery catered to different parts of the continent like Venice, Amsterdam, and the UK. The twilight pack gave medieval Europe/Romania representation with its Gothic castle architecture.

What we need: I think Europe is the best represented region architecturally in the game. Maybe a Eastern European (think old Russian / Slavic) architecture could be added but it’s definitely not a necessity at the moment.

Africa: 2 set (African Origins: base game, North African: Africa Pack)

The African origins set is a vast swath of sub-Saharan African architecture, mixed in with some typical safari theming. Definitely a more generic theming set to give the vibe or sub Saharan Africa. The north African set added in the Africa pack, gives representation to the northern African cultures (specifically Morocco).

What we need: I am not the most knowledgeable on African architecture. However, I know that the game can definitely use some more representation for the cultures of the Congo and east Africa specifically, the Ethiopian highlands region. I also think some cool architecture from west Africa. Specifically, the Mali empire would be cool as well.

Asia: 3 sets (East Asia: Base Game, Indian: Base Game, Indonesian: Tropical Pack)

Asia has representation for general East Asian architecture in the base game in the form of its East Asian set, the architecture of old Indian temples is represented as well and Indonesian South East Asian culture has representation in the tropical pack.

What we need: I believe that Asia could use some Himalayan/ central Asian architecture in the form of Mongolian style yurts, and Tibetan/Bhutanese style temples. Also, even though a lot of players use north African scenery to represent the Middle East some more Middle Eastern/ Levant/Arabic scenery would be appreciated.

Oceania: 2 sets (Australian: Australia Pack, Oceanian/ Polynesian: Oceania Pack)

Oceania has the Australian outback and it’s various settlements represented in the corrugated metal style pieces in the Australian pack. The Australia pack also has loads of aboriginal style architecture and art. The Oceania ups further with the new added Polynesian scenery, representing the various island cultures of the pacific ocean.

What we need: I think that after the Oceania pack the cultures of oceania are fairly represented in Planet Zoo.

Am I wrong about anything I said? What cultures are missing from Planet Zoo? Feel free to let me know if you have further knowledge on architecture/ cultures that I don’t know.

Good thread idea! I think a Mediterranean style archictecture based on Greek, Turkish, Iberian, etc would be good for Europe. Also I think more sets which aren't just cultural but would still be good for scenery such as museum, farm, modern city/urban etc could be included.

There are certainly a lot of architectural styles that could still be added to the game. However, the only thing I'm really missing is a Native American theme (totem poles and such). As far as scenery goes, this theme and more generic zoo/backstage stuff is all I really need. Everything else would be nice but I could live without.

A Mediterranean style would be great!

I just want a Mexico pack!! The style of architecture is very beautiful, in fact I was reading this while having a frappe in a small park, and I decided to take photos of the surroundings, look at a small example of the architecture from here

-North America could do with 1 more but I doubt Frontier will do it because it might not be very PC to do Native Americans and Wild West together and there aren't enough highly requested animals to justify 2 scenery packs while either doing Wild West or Native Americans individually might not bring enough unique pieces to the game.

-Europe is finished, Mediterranean architecture should be covered by Latin America

-South America needs 1 Latin America set, the SA set covers pre-Columbian architecture adequately for a zoo game

-Asia Himalayan set is not essential, you rarely see such architecture in zoos (I have never). A specific Middle East set would be going too cultural-specific for a zoo game I think

-Children's Zoo scenery set is also an option I think if Frontier is creative enough

The only thing missing from your list is probably a rustic cabin theme. It's not exclusive to any continent, but representing rural areas as well as the sleek urban ones would be nice. There are cultures that could use that type of representation. Appalachia immediately springs to mind, but I'm sure there are places in Europe and other parts of the world that could use a set like that. The versatility of a set like that makes it seem pretty strong. I could see this coming with an ABB, wild boar, and echidna.

Native American architecture is probably my top priority for cultural representation, followed by getting a better set for Latin America. For Native American architecture, I think the NW Coast would fit most seamlessly with the current designs. It could be paired with coastal or taiga animals and would probably feature the local sea otter and possibly the wapiti. Another possibility could be wild west, but I'm not sure about it. There are some animals that could work in a scrub themed pack, but I'm not sure how to do it tastefully.

Latin America mainly needs props. I could picture a good set in a Central America pack where there are plenty of animals to choose from.

The other things I want for scenery are more generic, like kid-friendly and barnyard/ranch.
  • I don't need anything from Europe, but Mediterranean (especially Greek) would be cool. Moscow might be unique. I kind of believe the rumors that the conservation pack was initially supposed to feature this and thus have a feeling they have a Moscow set lying around. It could come in a tundra or taiga.
  • Himalayas sounds neat, but I don't need it.
  • I'm no expert of African architecture, but I wouldn't be surprised if just two packs had major holes for such a large and diverse continent.
  • I think Oceania is decently covered right now.

Some kind of Pacific North Western theme based on cabin log pieces is a good and natural mix of Wild West and Native American vibes. That's also the native culture with the best totems, and seeing the sculptures that Frontier likes to design (best examples Tropical pack & Oceanian pack) they probably won't be able to resist making a totem made of black bear, wild boar and other temperate animals (North American or Eurasian ones)

I mean, do you ever find gargoyles in zoos? I don't think that's too relevant when it comes to building themes that are heavily based on cultural architecture.

I think the most likely scenery theme right now is West Coast / North American native theme, one of the most common wishlists out there is a tundra pack with walrus, muskox, wolverine and some oddball (usually otter/hare/penguin/whatever) + west coast building theme as scenery.

While I agree a Latin American theme would be pretty nice, at the same time Central/South America is still in such need for more animals that making a pack of that region a scenery pack would be a MASSIVE waste, the SA/Central America centered pack has to be an animal pack I can't highlight this enough. Besides, Latin American architecture isn't even that hard to replicate with the pieces we already have ingame so it's not really a super critical to have theme, just nice to have in general.

Very well, I can see a West Coast Tundra Pack given the relative paucity of animals from the region. It can't really be an animal pack I think.

But Latin America will likely be a scenery pack if only because it will sell better for Frontier to have lots of architecture from the region included.

I mean there are enough animals to make a nice tundra animal pack, the thing is that there are really only the wolverine, walrus and musk ox that are heavily requested so you would have to add alot of oddball picks. Not saying it couldnt work, but the animal pack slot would probably better serve as another pack
