Scooping cargo sucks

It just sucks. It's tedious, difficult, a waste of time, and utterly demoralizing. I just got into mining and now I regret purchasing this game. Please make something that scoops cargo easier - either a harpoon weapon or utility that grabs stuff in space and reels it in to your cargo bay automatically, or a salvage drone utility or internal device that flies around and grabs your stuff for you with little claws and brings them back to your cargo bay.

Also can we get a targeting option so we can press a button and cycle through loot on our radar? All the targeting options cycle through ships.

Thanks for your time.

Have they mentioned how expensive the drones might be? If they are a high-end item it might still be worthwhile to add class 1 harpoons so newbs can grab their bauxite chunks on their sidewinders. It might also make for fun PvP if you can grab a enemy ship and get pulled behind them - unless they break when pulled or something.

Anyways I'm just happy that there will be drones.

well, since they seem to be disposable, i wouldn't say that it makes scooping that much better... i don't know why FD does this... fighting is fun, trading is... well, trading, exploration is also fun for a while, but mining just sucks because of the scooping-problem. and now these drones come that probably go into an internal compartment, so they take away space and they just last for a single (or a few, depending on setting) containers until they vanish. that's not what i call "good feature design" it would be so much more fun if they'd say "ok, you sacrifice at least a size 2 compartment and your fuel-consumption rises for 50 or 100% while the drones are active but you wont have to mess around with that cargo scoop minigame anymore"

I hope you get a few uses for even the lowest class drones, and that you can refill them like you can ammo so they are cheap to replace. If you have to buy completely new drones for your internal compartment every mining trip I would rather not have them. I still think it's a good idea to have a re-usable harpoon that I can shoot at stuff and reel them in to my cargo bay. They could limit it's range to about 300 meters long, and make it fairly slow and bounce off of shields so it would be pretty unusable for a weapon, but very useful to miners who can't steer their ships straight. Hopefully it would also cost as much or less than a class 1 mining laser - about 6000 credits.

This would be perfect for newbies who are starting to mine in their sidewinder. One mount for a mining laser, one mount for a harpoon, and they can trade in their discovery scanner for a refinery. About 18,000 credits and they can start mining pretty easy.

I started mining in a Hauler. It really was tedious and to be quite honest, 3301 and no grappling hook or tractor beam? It's really ridiculous when we mastered the light speed travel.
Anyway... Mined up to about 400k and bought a Cobra to do rare runs. Never tried mining again as I was going crazy.

Edit: oh crap! I kinda misspelled the curse word. Im writing curse words from time to time but gets cut off by the forum mechanics. Sorry for misspelling it lol! Won't happen again, sir!

Yes the news of the drones being disposable is quite disappointing.
I tried mining in beta and have not got one single chunk collected since we went live as this game-play is woeful.

Since they've only talked about the drones in a very limited way, we can't really judge how they will be/are implemented, so my advice would be to wait until they release more information about how the drones actually work and what are the limitations.

Up to now we only have the following statements from Michael Brooks:

Michael Brookes replied to a thread Drones coming for powerplay in Dangerous Discussion
As mentioned in the update there is an area collect mode - release the drone and it will collect what it can within a a given radius for its lifetime. Michael

Michael Brookes replied to a thread Drones coming for powerplay in Dangerous Discussion
Yes, but as mentioned above it can collect more than one item. Targeted mode will only collect one item but is much quicker collection. Michael

Michael Brookes replied to a thread [UPDATE] Dev Update - 01.04.2015 in News and Updates
While not a dedicated ship mining will be gaining more love beyond the drones I've already mentioned. Michael

The drone is is one shot - so cannot be reused. Michael

As you can see these quotes generate more questions than they answer. Wait for future updates (or try to ask questions to the devs in the drones in 1.3 thread) for more detailed information.
