Horizons Scooping cargo.

Tried a salvage scooping mission again after a long break.
Got the destination planet. Found the mission target and found that scooping mission targets still has a problem.
Scoop deployed, approach the target barrel, very slow and careful. And before the targeted barrel gets to the crosshair (perfectly lined up I might add) it sounds like it is thumped and bounces away.

Is this a mission specific bug? Or a mission specific FD joke?

When you say 'target barrel reaches your crosshairs,' do you have the target barrel selected? You can't scoop up free objects just as they lay on the ground, you can only scoop up an item if it is your currently selected target/object [with a target lock, if you like, the same way you scoop up items in space]

And be aware of your ships dimensions and scoop placement. It is very easy to "play baseball" with a cannister when flying a 'Conda. But even a Python has a nose in front of cockpit. Align targeted item, aproach slowly , keep target slightly under crosshair, voila :)
(or get Limpet Collector and use that)

Cheers Cmdr's

What ship did you use - Python? In some ships, like the Python, you have to scoop at a lot lower speed - about 20 m/s. Other ships can scoop at up to 40 m/s.

The crosshairs were In Space! On My Python. Slooowlyy slooowly!
About 5ms.

Don't like limpets. I like to scoop. And with this type of space mission I used my AspX in the past. Same problem then. Slow and steady. It seems the military data stuff must be bigger barrels.:D

Was 5 MS slow enough? After all, the barrel only bounced away about ten metres. It was still under my nose.
Busted 2 of them and sold the third on the BM. (Of course, the second barrel gave me the shizenburgers so I busted it on purpose)

I guess my inexperience with the big P was the problem.

As mp4x asked, did you actually target the canister you wanted to scoop before flying towards it? If not, no matter how slowly you fly and how dead center the canister appears in the scooping diagram, you won't be able to retrieve it.

Which is kinda stupid.. why should you have to target something to scoop it? Just so you don't accidentally scoop something you didn't want to? IMHO easier to discard unwanted stuff than to have to continuously target stuff; this has been bugging me when out prospecting in my SRV; instead of driving once over a pile of mats, have to target, drive up, scoop, reverse, repeat.

Because that's the way it works and you still haven't answered if you did or did not target the item. Meanwhile my Python scoops great up to ~30MS and the Asp Explorer even easier...after I target them.

I guess the best way to manage scooping is debatable, it can indeed be annoying to target every single element you want to scoop. On the other hand, the rare times I go asteroid mining, I also find it annoying to discard every element my limpets gather because I only want ore.

Ideally, things should customizable, but it's already difficult to add new features without cluttering the UI too much as it is, so a balance has to be found.

My bad, when you said arrived at the planet i took it as an srv job :)

You are lining them up in the rectangular box, and not your targeting reticle. ...right?

I'm not the OP... :p

Sure, programmable limpets would be nice, but we're talking manual scooping here. If I don't want something, I can be careful and just fly/drive in such a manner that I don't pick it up.

This is your problem, your nose is in the way. Other ships work better, some are as bad. While I have scooped with my Python, I generally don't like taking out a 150+ million ship with a 7 million rebuy to scoop things or do general mission running. My Viper III or DBS do it much better and are fun to fly and cost as much as the rebuy on the Python. You mileage may vary...
