I have an A rated class 1 scoops fitted to my ASP but its scoop maxes out at 42 which is pityfull compared to the one i had on my Cobra. My question is out of rating and class, which improves the scoop the best (the slot is class 3 on the asp) and where will i find higher tech stuff to kit this baby out?

You need a class 5 is the best for the Asp! I found moving it to a more central slot works ie not at the bottom on the list!
I have a 6C scoop on my exploration Asp. Rate of 627 kg/s. Can fill from empty in 51 seconds.
If you plan on exploring, A6 is the best damn scoop you can get and is highly recommended. The second best is the 6C if you cannot afford it.
That's the one weakness of the ASP. An A4 scoop would be ideal for it, but there's no class 4 slot. Your forced to either go 3,5, or 6. The bigger the better, but then you have to either compromise cargo capacity or shields. If they'd only up one of the 3 slots to a 4 the ASP would be the best all around ship hands down. It was the bomb until they nerfed it after the early betas.

I'm scared to invest in a 27mil 6A due to wear and tear, and have one componant worth 5 times the cost of my ship....

If you fit high class scoops then you're pretty much not going to ever trade with it. On mine I have a B3, although was thinking of an A3 for that little extra, the size 6 compartment has cargo space, and size 5 has shield which is also pretty useful. It doesn't seem to suck at exploring, either - just scoop when you arrive at any scoopable system, doesn't take long if you're only refilling from one or two jumps. I guess later I might re-optimise the Asp away from cargo, but to do that I want a bigger and better cargo ship first.

Yeah, I went with the 6B as well. Like you say, fitting the 6A at about 25 million for me was just that bit too scary. Thing is, I haven't really even seen the 6B at it's best....my tank is usually filled by the time the counter is zooming up to full scooping capacity !
When I'm trading, I use a 64t cargo rack, when exploring, I swap it out for a C6 or D6 scoop.
That doesn't leave a lot of cargo space after adding the auto repair module, but I don't think that there are many "alien artefacts" out there just yet...
