Scope of ED?

A week or so ago, I was doing a Google search for “Elite Dangerous Alpha”, when I came across the Star Citizen (RSI) forum, I had only visited once before, not that I dislike SC, I’m one of the many that thinks there’s room for ED & SC. I just like the idea of ED more, will I get SC? I don’t know, I guess like a lot of people I’ll wait for the reviews. What do I think ED will have that SC won’t? An accurate modelled Milky Way galaxy, with planets (some spinning) orbiting stars, moons orbiting planets & all in all, a real attempt to keep to some semblance of realism (with of course some caveats, hyperspace being one of them). But what I’ve struggled to like in the past & as far as I know is in SC, is jump gates of some sort, you have to travel to this particular point in a system to get to that particular system, it just feels too constraint for me. ED with hyperspace is go where you want, as long as you’re not too close to a large mass & have enough fuel, SC with jump gates of sorts, is overlaying routes, a road system for space, I know which will feel like having more freedom. Anyway I digress…

As I perused this RSI forum thread on the ED alpha, I was quite shocked at some of the quite nasty comments that were up there about ED, why? Maybe an itty bitty British company making serious in roads to the space-sim-game genre, where an American company with over 16 times the backing, had not much to show it’s backers, creating a level of jealously, I just don’t know. Don’t get me wrong, for every post of bitterness, there seem to be one of praise. But then I came across a comment that left me almost speechless, some guy claimed “We all know SC is going to have more scope than ED, anyway”. WHAT. Is this jealously kicking in again, or just an ill informed poster, maybe his definition of “scope” differs from the rest of us.

Anyway, I’ve decided to not to stray into the RSI forums anymore, it’s much nicer here anyway & I’ll wait to see if SC is any good, making an informed decision to buy it or not. :)

Well what is it that opinions are like because everyone has one? I recommend the /r/starcitizen thread on Reddit rather than the official forums, seem to be a much tighter representation of the community and they have some mature positive discussions about Elite Dangerous, seems many folk there are equally looking forward to both games. Only yesterday our very own Brumster's video on Saitek vs CH Hotas was being discussed on the front page while they waited for the DFM live stream.

I wouldn't worry about the 'bitter rivalry' that some people insist on trying to create between ED and SC.

SC is promising more features, maybe that's what he's referring too. Or maybe it's the amount of 'hand-crafted' areas in SC compared to ED.

However ED is, as you say, more free. It's also completely to scale and the possibilities for gameplay expansion is almost limitless.

By relying so much on hand-crafted content, SC will always be limited.

SC does not interest me at all, it more a hype than a game itself and the airplane model in space in SC is laughable, let alone playability.

Throwing and squeezing everything you can into a game .. I heard of that one before .. somewhere in the teacup, as teapot will tell you. :D

Same reason people fight over which is better of any other thing like Call of Duty or Battlefield, Linux or Windows, iOS or Android... Just the way things work I guess :p

You get a bit of it here as well, aimed at SC instead.

Some people will fixate on something and hate anything else that's remotely like a competitor even if there's no good reason for it.

It is nicer here. Just like the Subscriber's Den is a lot nicer than the rest of the SC forums. With a larger community you simply get more trolls and other ats.

(Huh, at doesn't get censored either? Is sh*t the only word this forum censors?)

I am not backing SC or really taken more than a casual glance at a screenshot or 1 hanger video so I am not informed. That said, I've never had a bad thing to say about SC either. I know a LOT of fellow Elite players are, as well as FD so I just keep to E:D and this post is pretty much my exclusive SC-related post anywhere. No reason we can't have more space games! We've been so limited in the past. I think technology was a major issue (or lack ther-of) in not having great space games. I'm just glad I've lived long enough to see Elite's re-emergence!

Let's give Chris Robert's a bit of ED love. He's an Elite Dangerous backer and helped bring our favourite space series back.

Poor guy is looking more and more tired. That live event thing last night didn't help either. Take a break Chris, maybe spend some downtime in Alpha 4 ;-)

I will have to play the SC DFM before I can know for sure. Some alarm bells ringing already regarding inertia modelling and the 3rd person view in combat - but I will hold off any kind of judgement until I have actually had a go for myself - it may be awesome - I really hope it is.

However having played X series, Evochron Mercenary, BSG:Diaspora and a few others - I think E : D gameplay is all the better for favouring pitch & roll like an aircraft. Only my opinion though. I do agree with the game designers that yaw should be 'outlaw', otherwise the game combat would just distill down to a moveable newtonian strafing turret in space type of thing - I've done that on other games, and my personal impression is that it becomes very tedious, very quickly. Again, only my opinion.

I don't follow SC that closely, but the underlying flight models of the two games seem very similar. They both have the same features (preservation of inertia, 6DOF), and make the same concessions (speed limit). Newtonian-lite basically.

As far as the de-emphasis of yaw in Elite to combat "turreting"... wasn't Chris Roberts talking about doing something similar for pretty much the same reason?

Yes, I seem to recall him talking about it on the dogfighting demo video they did before Xmas.
I've backed SC (as well as alpha backing ED), so I am looking forward to getting my hands on the DFM later this month - once I have actually played it, then I will know all I need to know about it :D

Well, for the record I'm an American and I'm an ED backer, not SC. If SC materializes into a good game I'll likely play it too. Having a large scope isn't always a good thing, though. All these grand plans very often don't materialize and I am highly skeptical about a project with such a huge workload but has already taken in enough money to shut operations and be considered a financial success. In other words I'll believe it when I see it when it comes to SC. I hope it is a success...but I'm not putting my money on it.

I got the usual "hurr durr, SC is going to be SO MUCH MORE AWESOME than Elite ever will be" comments on youtube too. I file that in the same drawer as people cheering at the animation of a helmet flipping.

I judge games by the... well... game. I say any hater about any particular game should just do their thing, I'll do mine. So far, ED is shaping up awesome, despite its share of issues. SC, perhaps not so much, at least not in the direction of a game I would like to play.

To each their own.

The helmet flip is very cool. Perhaps illustrating the difference in thinking behind Star Citizen. I would never flip my helmet in that way, I'm British - we don't do things like that and anyway I'd probably drop it and damage it. But Chris Roberts wants me to play a character that flips his helmet in that excited care free manner. It's ok, most of his games have insisted that I play a part rather than choose my persona. There is a place for that kind of game, it isn't a design flaw - it's a design choice. He's the director and he'll direct me to some extent even if its just subtle things.

Nothing so far in Elite Dangerous has dictated the kind of character I'm playing. It's as mysterious as it ever was. I'm probably just me, in the future with a very slim looking body.

I don't even know why people compare ED and SC as they are going to turn out to be very different. SC is more closer to X Rebirth than any of the previous Elite series and there really is no comparison for Elite Dangerous at all unless you count the likes of Pioneer space sim, which is more of a remake of Elite II anyway.

I would just ignore all the ill informed rhetoric and apologist posts regarding Star Citizens uncomfortably forced marriage to Elite and do not even get involved. Nothing will compare.
