Scott Manly talks with David Braben

I have to say its hard not to feel ED is a game made by total anoraks for total anoraks.

I'm hoping they come to reason and put a game in there for anyone who's not just a giant asparagusy nerd. The kind that keeps talking about filling in blanks with your imagination.

I've felt the same about life in the universe; while the rise of life could very well be a common thing, the rise of intelligent life will likely be rare due to the frequency extinction events. We have been extremely fortunate so far, but even in our little star system something disastrous is going to happen again. We could have another million years of calm, or we may learn tomorrow a barrage of asteroids are coming. God help us if a black hole comes... even if we dedicated most of our resources throughout the world to stop it, I don't think we could. Then again, given enough resources and time, scientists can make just about anything happen. Look at what NASA does on its pitiful budget. Its amazing they get anywhere with that little financial support.

Mostly a conversation about astronomy, extinction events and the philosophy behind them (I found it interesting).

However, it was mentioned that the FDL or the Vulture (not sure exactly which, maybe both) will be expensive. Also, when they bring in planetary landings, there will be an exploration tag for first CMDR to land on the planet (at least according to DB's ideas).

Was a nice interview, but I think the interview was predicated by the fact that they weren't going to talk about ED. As soon as the conversation shifted to ED, DB was quick to move away from the topic (rightfully so, he was having a beer and that's probably not the best time to do an interview about your product). Though we'll see what part 2 will bring.

Ah, a two parter. I didn't even notice. Thanks for pointing that out.

And, indeed, its more of a discussion about astronomy and not ED. It was interesting to hear the Elite mastermind talk about such things. Seems he's as big of a geek as I am, except he gets paid better :D

"Small dark objects that you can't see until they get really, really close" - you mean like asteroids in a Resource Extraction Zone when the ring is in shadow! Thanks to the still puny ship lights! :p

Maybe sentient life is rare enough in the universe to cause our alien "genetic engineers" reason to divert potential life clearing asteroid impacts away from earth? After all...65 million years is a long time to be just "lucky", but one also wonders if a sentient lifeform is worth saving that hasn't the wisdom to save itself from itself?

He's talking about rogue planets or rogue asteroids - objects that aren't tied to a star. Later on he goes to talk about the Oort cloud and what might happen if such a rogue object were to crash through it. He's not talking about E: D, he's talking about real astronomy.
