Screen shot key 'broken'...any ideas?

I've raised a support ticket but thought I'd ask here for pointers too given we tend to love our screens :D
Basically...F10 doesn't take screenshots anymore since 10th September. And Alt F10 seems to zoom in so it looks like 640x480 or less filling the screen, and then panning about to capture the whole 1920x1200, but no actual file gets created.

I symlinked the game off the SSD to a spinning disk, but that was mid August and I have shots until 10 September so it wasn't that. I do recall a notification from raptr or game evolve or whatever it was indicating they were closing doors (I always thought they were an arm of AMD since it got installed with their drivers) but anyways, I uninstalled all that...but can't remember when. But could well be mid September.

I had waited until 2.4 to see if that would fix it but....nope.
Is there a config file somewhere that I can check the folder path is valid?
Any other ideas?

Oh....I have corsair keyboard and mouse which support remapping keys and I had mapped F10 to a mouse key. I noticed the keyboard mapping (side keys mapped gal map and stuff) aren't working, so I used the actual F10 key for testing. My understanding, though, is that the remapping simulates pressing the original key rather than interfering with the original key (so in effect I have 2 F10's) so again, I don't think it related.....but mention it in case someone has other ideas :)

Screenies via snipping tool are just too awkward

Are you using elite Dangerous Discovery? That program automatically converts your screenshots into .jpg, moves them to a different folder and deletes the original .bmp file.
If you are using EDD, look under settings and the screenshot settings are near the bottom. You should be able to see what folder it's moving them to.

On my PC they are in My Documents\My Pictures\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous

Alt-F10 takes a high rez (4x resolution) screenshot which quickly re-renders the picture in four different quadrants and stitches them together. So it looks like it's taking screenshots but they just aren't in the folder you're expecting them.

Yes to EDD but the screen shot function is disabled (Err..I think). I was using Captains log to upload to imgur automatically instead. But......that doesn't work either. The files just don't *seem* to be created.
I'm pretty sure I tested without tools running but will try again. Wouldn't be the first time I thought one thing and did another without realising :)

Thanks....will check when I get home o7

You might want to try MSI Afterburner. Works like charm for both screenshots and video. It also works with SweetFX (default game screenshot ignores SweetFX). Not sure if you use SweetFX at all, but i recommend it if you are a screenshot fan.

The last time screenshots stopped working for me it was a problem with F10 being used by GeForce Experience, too. Remap the key binding in GeForce Experience.

Check your Journal, the screenshot event must be there. Should help narrow down the symptoms.

I had problems too right after installing 2.4. It wasn't W10 write-to-disk rights problems, nor BitDefender red-flagging (for some reason) Elite, but in the Journal, the screenshot event was there, but there was no path.
Someday later it came back, I have no idea why/how. I think there was a Windows update between those moments, but I doubt there's a link.

Wish I could help. You can trying using Greenshot in the meantime; cause yeah, ScreenShotChanger and EDD or any other similar tool won't be able to convert anything, since the file never exists.

Now *that* is an excellent idea and I'm ashamed I didn't think of it.

I did try screenshot with no tools running and also verified EDD screen shot move and rename was off (and checked the converted folder in any case.....nothing since January when I was playing around with it)

But yeah.....the journal.....if only I'd read the forum before leaving for work. I shall check and report back when I get home

Check all your key bindings, make doubly sure you have not bound it to anything else. F10 is a sort of "hard-wired" binding for screenshots and will be overridden by a key binding set in the game options.

OK so an update.

F10 does NOT generate a screenshot event in the Journal.
Alt F10 does.
Journal no longer tells the path :(
Search of entire PC for picture files modified today reveal no file.

Yeah, no path, no file, that's for sure. I would suggest something to do with the game either not finding the directory, or having some right refused by Windows, but since it sort of fixed itself for me, there's only so much I can suggest.

Try finding out of a new or updated software isn't using the same hotkey, but I guess you did that already?

I might try remove and reinstall the game. If that won't help, I might reset windows.....might be needed with the swap to nvidia anyways.

What I meant by no path is that the Alt F10 generates a screenshot event but the path is not listed. Where as in older journals, the screenshot event does show the path. I'm guessing the path was removed in one of the updates....although it could be that it not showing because it's broken, but I'd at least expect an empty field in that case.

I think this is significant, it seems to be some sort of utility, maybe associated with your computer or a third party tool from a video driver, mine certainly doesn't do that. The danger with removing and reinstalling the game is that it may or may not end up fixing the problem. If it doesn't fix the problem you are back to square one, having wasted a fair amount of time and effort. If it does fix the problem, you still have no idea what caused it so it may re-appear at any time. My normal process here is to disable any and all utilities not needed to actually run the computer, keyboard, joystick, video and etc. If it fixes it then enable each one until you hit the problem one. But it does appear as if a utility is intercepting your keystrokes before they reach the game.

I've run into a related issue. VoiceAttack translates spoken commands into keystrokes. If the Alt key is used in a command, Windows can get confused and F10 is treated as Alt+F10 and only takes high-res pictures. To fix it, manually tap the Alt key, which will reset the key state (and F10 will take regular screen shots again).

I apologize for suggesting this again but trying the Afterburner or other similar 3rd party tool could save you from reinstalling the game and the windows. These tools allow you to chose your custom path for screenshots and bind whatever keyboard button you want for that. All this works independently from the game settings so even if something is broken within the game it shouldnt affect the Afterburner. It is worth trying at least as reinstalling the windows seems like a lot of trouble :)

That's what I understood :D If F10 doesn't work, it's unlikely Alt+F10 will work anyway, it's the same event, albeit one does a supersampling thing. Have you submitted a Support ticket? I'd be curious to know TechSupport reply on this.

No apologies needed. My MSI GTX1080 arrives to the PO Box today so I'll pick it up in the morning. Being MSI, no doubt afterburner will get installed anyhow. If it does video too without me needing to remember to do something (like playsTV was...until it broke) then I'm sold :)
On bus on way home right now but will check it out soon.

Hmmmm. I agree it appears F10 might be intercepted. I did check bindings but didn't see anything. Will try to find the actual binding file when I home and search that.

But.....
Alt F10 is still being caught by the game as evidenced by the journal entry. But it writes to null. So....even once I find a binding/intercept issue (assuming there is one), I still have a problem :(

I do have voice attack installed cos I bought some of those HCS voicepacks. Haven't run it in months though cos it never understands my accent and I can't afford to keep replacing my screens 8)

Yip.....no response yet. Chances are we'll fix it before they get back to me :/

Silly question perhaps, but have you tried removing the symlink? Wouldn't be the first time that one got corrupted and screwed up a game... [I don't think this will help given the symptoms, but it's something quick and easy to try]
