Screen shot key 'broken'...any ideas?

Silly question perhaps, but have you tried removing the symlink? Wouldn't be the first time that one got corrupted and screwed up a game... [I don't think this will help given the symptoms, but it's something quick and easy to try]

No. But it's worth a shot. I'll delete and recreate it first. And then delete and move the files back to c drive.

Now fwiw....
A reboot 'fixed' the odd zoom and pan effect for HD screen shot..... still doesn't write a file, but it now shows a percentage counter in to left of screen and screen remains 'normal'.

Checked the binding files.... no F10 (I did find 11 and 12), so it isn't being remapped in game.
Checked video driver is latest.
Checked and video driver 'relive' or whatever it's called is all off.....key combos are different anyways and I checked the output folder.
Found matching screen shot event (HD) in the main log (IE, not journal).... It's even more vague than journal.
Rebooted and made sure pretty much nothing was started to eliminate other apps stealing the key press.

No joy. Too tired now.... will try again tomorrow.

And I just realised I recently installed directory opus.....i should probably remove that as a test just in case.

Yeah, third party programs can be a real pain in this regard. I had a similar problem with Photoshop. I frequently use Ctrl-Alt-M to pull up the Curves tool, with its last-used settings. For a long time this had been broken on my computer, until I realized a third-party program was using this for a feature that I had turned off. It was still trapping the input despite disabling the feature. Grrr.

I'd consider turning off all applications that you normally have running, and see if it solves it. Then you can turn them back on, one at a time, until you find the culprit.

Support came back asking if it's fixed since they see screenshot in their logs....I'm assuming the HD.
Also suggested clean boot using msconfig.

So....clean boot has certainly reduced CPU usage :) I'll have to switch stuff back on one by one to determine who's wasting CPU cycles.
But.....no joy on the screenshot front.

I deleted and recreated symlink and then had the idea about the idea of non horizons......but that needed to recover to orbit so I aborted for now.
Have had to go out but I left it downloading the training missions.....anyone verify that screenshots should work in training?

A quick thought, FDEV seems to think the screenshot function in ED is working since it records a screenshot action, however the screenshot isn't getting written to disk. Is it possible that the folder the screenshots are supposed to be saved in is read only?

If you have EDDiscovery installed it will allow you to do an auto convert to a different format and specify a different folder, for instance I have a folder for my regular format screenshots and have EDDiscovery auto-convert screenshots to .jpg in a different folder. How about trying that and see if it works, if it saves the screenshot in an alternative folder it may be a permission problem in the local file system.

well, only for HD. Normal F10 does nowt. I did think permissions, but I can change stuff in the folder and surely the game runs under my context? EDD needs the file to be written first as it monitors that folder, and converts new files - so no help unfortunately

well, I was wrong about path not existing in the journal. not sure how I missed it before

Not that it's much help given it's blank.

Got my new GPU and thus removed the AMD drivers and installed the Nvidia. Still no screenshot! (and disappointingly I still get frame drops :( what IS it with this game? GPU is doing nothing (30%) but we drop to 57fps even on the spinny ship loading which make it stutter...grr....guess I need to get a gsync monitor now)

I ended up removing and reinstalling the game - no dice. Discovered windows 10 has a game mode (?) and the ability to record - didn't know that....verified it was all off and that any shortcuts were not F10. No joy.

So....with screenshots being kind of important for this game, and me itching to get going on the DECE, I decided to 'reset' windows 10 - which is essentially a fresh install. After installing the game installed, I copied the game files over to avoid needing to redownload. Voilla :) It's all working again.

Shame we won't know what broke, but I really didn't want to waste another week of trial and error and still end up not fixing it. Appreciate the all the help Commanders

Well that's good news, even though you had to do it the hard way :( So in the end, with your reinstall and my windows update, it seems like something broke windows-side with regards to file path.

I had the problem of screenshots not actually doing anything, found a fix.
Set Elite Dangerous' game folder as an exclusion in your anti-virus program.
That's it.

For some reason my AV-program was blocking the game from taking screen shots.

Ooh. I haven't actually reinstalled my AV yet so that'll be something to watch out for.
I do think there were two problems though:
1) F10 was being intercepted by something other than Elite. Given everything got turned off and it was still a problem, I think the windows reset was probably inevitable.
2) Something blocking file creation OR elite forgot where to write and just gives up. For this the AV could be a cause. I'm running Bitdefender and am not sure when it updated to 2018....can't say it's been complaining though which I would have expected if it was blocking suspicious (in its mind) activity.

By way of update from support, they came back over night with......AV or user permissions. I think they got distracted by the fact HD screenshots generated an event and missed the part where regular screenshots did not.

Quick update....
Installed the AV (Bitdefender) and hitting F10 initially kicked up a blocked warning and no 'screen shot captured' message.
Unblocked elite and tried again. Now get the screenshot captures message and EDD errors since it's doing the file rename. Unblock EDD and all is well.

I don't recall ever seeing the pop up block before but that's not to say it didn't pop just as I was tapping the keyboard and thus inadvertently confirmed 'keep blocking'. But.....that wouldn't explain why the HD screenshot would be treated differently. So I'm not convinced this was the root cause.
