Screenshot Comparisons: Xbox vs PC

Hi all! I'm STILL waiting for the PS4 version of ED to come out, so in the meantime I'm finding the Xbox forum very insightful. I particularly enjoyed a recent post showing screenshots from Xbox ED. The graphics seem really good! Ironically, I've also seen more than one post about people switching from Xbox to PC for better graphics.. So I have a favor to ask, would some of you who have both Xbox and PC versions of ED post a couple of side-by-side comparison shots from each platform? I'm a 1080p gamer, so please downscale any 4K images to 1080p or less. Thank you!

ps - I know the moderators don't want people starting "console wars", and I'm certainly not looking for that at all. I'm just curious what the differences are, graphically-speaking, between the consoles and PC. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised at how close the consoles come to the PC in meeting my visual expectations. We could even play a game, like "guess which screenshot is Xbox and which is PC!"

Think we need MoleHD for that. He is playing both versions.. (more CMDR's are, but as for now, Mole is the only one i can come up with)

though, with the release of 2.3, the planetary textures are a LOT better. I think the XboxOne version is on par with a medium spec'd gaming PC.. Most people switch because of HOTAS support i think, not necessarily because of graphics.

Its an interesting question though. Would love to see this as well, 2 pictures form the exact same location, one PC, and one XboxOne.

But indeed, please, no console bashing, console war stuff. We all play on our preferred platform. It'll be a instant thread lock.

Think it depends on what $$$ you put in a Pc.
It's always a matter of what you put in.
For the cost of the Xbox the Graphics are very very good.

Uni's been playing both for a lot longer, he's just way, way less vocal about it.

Some PCs are better. Some PCs are worse. XB1 has the advantage of having a standardized setup that can be targeted for optimization. Major differences you'll see are going to be in the resolution of shadows and draw distance of details and textures.

^this. There is no good single baseline for comparison to the pc version since it looks as good as how high you've cranked up the settings, on what graphics card. And that's oversimplifying it to boot.

TC I would look at the screenshots of the xbox version and simply expect something in that ballpark. A bit of good news, the xbox version has had some beautification & optimisation in recent updates, it's considerably less relativity fugly as a result. I would expect the ps experience to be very similar, just how nearly every game is before bringing the digital foundry geek squad out of their cupboard.

I own both versions but almost do not play on PC since XBox release, have enough of it at work. Considering I also prefer huge TV screen, it limits my resolution to 1080p. I did not find a lot of difference last time I tried PC version with Steam Link and Controller on the same TV (was before Horizons appeared on XBox), scaled down to 1080p.

Until last patch there was big difference in planet surface details. Also new "rich" stations, like tourist, high tech or refinery, and in general stations from outside were "blinking" noticeably, like there was not enough of antialiasing or something of the sort, comparing to PC - but it is almost gone in 2.3.

My PC was very advanced at Elite start, so it is far from it now. However it is not the main point of my preferences, even with HOTAS and big monitor, overall experience is very different to me, when comparing PC to console. I prefer relaxing atmosphere of XBox and it is not limited to ED.

In the meantime, it should be easy enough to compare Xbox vs PC versions on YouTube

My YouTube frame-of-reference is mostly ObsidianAnt's videos. He does lots of canyon runs over moons, drops down into planet rings, skims over stations and bases and large ships, etc. I'd be happy to see some similar content from an Xbox (stills are fine). I suspect that distant stars, nebula, and individual ships are easy enough for a console, but terrain, rings (inside), and perhaps inside stations might be more demanding. Anyone want to share some shots of these?

It's tricky because Xbox uploads videos in 720p and compressed to hell. But, luckily, we have a player who captures their Xbox with a capture card in 1080p.

This is one of theirs (Crusina Luachra)

I played it for a few minutes on my PC and it looked great but I felt that losing all my ranks, reputation, and modified gear wasn't worth the switch.

Don't worry, the ps4 version of ED will have the same standard as the pc version, except 4K.

We could have the same on Xbox, but we don't due to lack of money and co workers.

Not that much difference to be honest, Xbox looks to be a mix of medium and high settings (ambient occlusion looks a bit worse on xb1).

Biggest difference comes from framerate and resolution, 1080/30 for xb1 and whatever your pc can handle, but generally higher.

I'm excited for the release of the PS4 version but not because I want to switch (I have both) but because I want to see how FDev adapt the game for PS4 Pro. For me this will be a great opportunity to see what improvements we may see from a Scorpio version! I'm sure the games gonna look great on the vanilla PS4 too and I'm truly happy that we are going to have some new cmdrs like yourself OP join our community!

Ezren is right, our horsey friend has been dual ED gaming on both platforms a lot longer than me. I try not to make comparisons between Xbox and PC too much when it comes to ED, the Xbox version is a testament to FDev in how a port should look when transferred. It's actually quite hard in general ED gameplay to note the differences graphically until you come to planetary textures. I like showing off my fancy schmancy blue HUD or posting stuff on here from the beta of 2.3 when that was going... for no other reason than it was in here I started playing ED...

Overly vocal about having a PC, Ezren? Didn't realise folks thought I was that shallow... I do harp on a bit, yeah (thanks Bongo :x) It might be considered a bit thoughtless, if so, apologies are due and I'll keep my counsel in DD where I belong. It's merely simple enthusiastic idiocy, not through some over inflated sense of one-upmanship.

I switched back to PC primarily because I wanted to play other games outside of ED... namely the many flight sims I still had in my Steam libary from my old PC gaming days, also wanted to move on to ARMA 3 and the like since I was an avid ARMA 2 player. With ED, trying it out with a decent HOTAS setup, using mouse and keyboard for galaxy map and menus... something impossible on the Xbox at the moment. Also the premonition of having to buy overpriced Microsoft peripherals like a Microsoft Scorpio only mouse and keyboard...Microsoft Scorpio only HOTAS...you can just feel it's coming, can't you? [yesnod]

The graphics boost for all my games on the PC was purely a bonus running everything at native 4K resolutions in ultra settings at 60fps plus. Even on a relatively small 27" 4K monitor compared to the 50" HD TV I used for the Xbox, the difference is quite stunning in flight sims in particular.

When it comes to cost, I forked out nearly 2 grand on the PC...ex gratia payout from my Army pension paid for it... but I didn't buy the PC to play ED, that's approaching the realms of being silly...I bought it because I was always a PC gamer at heart, I like flight sims and military sims plus the versatility of game modding that the PC offers... the Xbox just ain't going there even though a few developers like Bethesda are catching on :)

The Witcher 3 with ultra hi res textures and various other mods is pretty awesome.
