I forgot how to take a screenshot. I tried F10 with and without ALT but it didnt work and nor did F12...

I'd also like to know this! I've binded something else to F10 and now I just cannot seem to find it in the controls menu!
try to unbind F10 and see if that works, but as far as i know there is no bind for screenshot so don't use F10 for anything
screenshots are saved here:
C:\Users\[PCNAME]\Pictures\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous
Well, as I remember I did unbind F10, as if it was inside the control settings, but now I cannot find it. I've rolled up and down running through the lines for a couple of times now, but no avail. I've also checked that directory, but I have no screenshots there, athough I do press F10 from time to time. I do this because I use a key binder application for quick messages.
Aha it still is F10 - I looked in the wrong folder.

C:\Users\<User Name>\Saved Games\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Screenshots.
When I press Alt/F10 the game seems to pause for a few seconds as though it is doing something, but when I check the folder it's empty

mine screens are placed:
C:\Users\<User Name>\Pictures\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous
they used to be placed in another directory, maybe try to search Screenshot_0000.bmp (or similar names just to see where it save on your hdd)

They moved to the "Pictures" folder in the user profile special folder, wherever that is on your login.
It should be "%userprofile%\Pictures\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous"
