SCUF Vantage compatilbility with ED

I thought E3 was pretty good this year, especially for PS4. One of the cool things that really piqued my interest was the SCUF Vantage controller, which has extra paddles and side triggers for key rebinding:

As soon as I saw it, I immediately thought of Elite Dangerous and how those extra buttons are just begging to be mapped to my ship functions. Heat sinks, SBC, cargo rack, PIPS... this seems like a dream.

But like all good cynics, I doubted if the extra controls could be mapped like that for ED. So, I asked FD and SCUF. Frontier responded with a... very Frontier response:

Thank you for getting in touch with us at Frontier,

Unfortunately, I am unable to confirm for you the compatibility of the PS4 scuff controller, if this controller merely mimics the regular PS4 control then there should be no issues however as far as I am aware we do not have any additional functionality that is accessed via the use of this peripheral.

Hopefully, this helped to resolve/provide clarification regarding your matter however if you still have any questions or issues please do not hesitate to contact us as we are always happy to help

Best Regards

So, a glimmer of hope, but no commitment, which is fine. The response I got from SCUF, however:

Hello Tiny Rick,

Well, I have some super awesome news for you Tiny Rick! The new SAX buttons are completely remappable with any of the other buttons on the controller with the exception of the PlayStation button, Share button, and Options button. Other than those, you are more than free to set any of your additional functions that Elite Dangerous may need to your paddles and SAX buttons.

If you have any further questions or concerns feel free to respond to this ticket or call our Customer Support lines.

Thanks for your business and for choosing SCUF!

Best regards,
SCUF Francisco

Well, there you have it! Looks like I'm in the market for a new controller. I'll update once I get one to confirm the remapping capabilities!

I don't get how there's supposed to be "extra buttons". Yes, there are additional hardware buttons on the device, but the number of function keys the PS4 supports stays the same. The standard DS4 has a set number of buttons and axes. Third party controllers can also only have those. I can already remap any function in ED to any of my DS4s buttons, as I can on my HOTAS if I use that (plus all the dual button keybinds ED allows), without the need for "hardware remapping". But a triangle button stays a triangle button, and a new controller just doesn't magically add a dodecahedron button function to the PS4s OS. Specialised controllers like that one are built to enhance the performance of competitive gamers by giving more variety in button placement and make it more comfortable to hold, nothing more.

Wrong, as you can now assign a "hold square+up direction" or equivalent to the extra buttons, rather than actually holding down one of the main buttons and pressing another. I'll no longer have to worry about boosting when I'm trying to engage landing gear, since I can now assign a paddle or side "sax" button to it.

Can you show me where it says that you can put a 2-button-combination directly onto one key of the controller, via the controller itself?
I only found the info that macros are not supported. From the video and their response I only understand that you could e.g. put another square button on one of the extra keys.

Sorry, my response was confusing. The landing gear, for example, is mapped to a hold O+downpad preset, but can be reassigned to a trigger or SAX button. The paddles aren't just remapping of the original controller buttons, "Other than those, you are more than free to set any of your additional functions that Elite Dangerous may need to your paddles and SAX buttons."

My takeaway from that last part is that when keybinding in the ED options, you can use the extra SAX or paddles to assign functions and not simply remap one button to another.

Well yeah. Anyone who purchases one of these thinking it gives them commands, doesn't understand who these things are made for.

It's for tourneys such as MLG, where the rules are strict for balance.

I have several tourney-grade pads as a collector.

I still disagree, since this would require an adjustment on Sony’s part to include a new button control code in their OS and controller protocols. The PS4 only supports exactly the controls that exist on the original DS4, and no third party manufacturer can ignore that.

The only other option to implement that would be some kind of automatism where the Controller itself sends the two button presses simultaneously to the console, but I’m convinced this would be considered a macro and thus forbidden by Sony due to its potential uses for gaining an unfair advantage at PvP games.

Edit: Correction, I just learned that there are PS4 controllers with macro functionality, like the old version of the Nacon Revolution Pro (they removed the feature on the newer ones for to E-sports reasons it seems).

First macro to add for me would be, Automatic save and exit command...
Tired of pressing these in a row...

Options / Esc
Up / W
X / enter...
Right / D
X / enter...

The new Scuf controller does not emulate a DS4 it is its own complete rebuild by scuf, it has been specifically allowed by the PS4 firmware to replace a DS4 on the console by the firmware for all DS4 games...
It will not function on remote play because its a stand alone controller... This is the same as all Third party license controllers act..
scuf-vantage-03.jpg

With this controller scuf stopped modding Pre built DS4s and built them from Zero this is why they needed a license from SIEA this time... you can see from the front why they required a start from zero build...
Not SIEE licensed yet they have there Own deals with other brands...
