Search and Rescue actually did work. :)

Maybe this is old news, but this was the first time it happened to me.
I went to investigate a threat 3 Distress Call.
After I destroyed the three waves of pirates, a Search and Rescue Anaconda popped in.
I was wondering if it really does something, or if it is just scenery, so I stayed a while longer to see what happens.
Lo and behold, the SaR Annie fired a Fuel Limpet at the hapless Keelback which then proceeded to promptly high wake out! Nice! :) [up]

That's nice to know. That gives a reason to stick around and wait for the rescue ships.

It would be nice if the rescue ship gave you a mission out of gratitude for protecting the ship.

That's great! I do get a little tired of the victim continuing to whine on long after the rescue is over. I guess these little refinements can go on in the background without the need for a formal release. Nice.

I've heard of this before but never seen it.

Whenever I happen across a distress call, all that happens is the baddies explode and yet I STILL keep hearing messages about how the guy is being attacked and his ship is crippled.

"Dude, the pirate is space-dust and, according to the scan I just did, your ship is at 100% health and your shields aren't even dented so quit whining!"

Maybe I was slow enough. Picking off those Eagles & Vipers in my newly bought Annie which I haven't had time to engineer much yet takes minutes instead of seconds (for me). :)
