Scientists working at the Parkes radio telescope have announced that after 11 years of searching for evidence of gravitational waves, their search has come up empty. It’s a problem for physics, which maintains that gravitational waves should exist if general relativity is reliable. Resolving the discrepancy could require rethinking the physics of black holes, or even more foundational physical theory. The results were published in the journal Science.
