Season 3 and beyond

It seems like everyone is waiting for spacelegs and atmospheric landings. I hope that S3 brings us some kind of galaxy wide storyline of consequence. I know Sol is out of bounds for this idea (or is it?) but I think I'd like to see war bring the destruction of spaceports and systems. Imagine jumping into a system and there being nothing but rubble and a cloud of expanding gas, or being caught in a thargoid nova bomb and having to hyperspace out of the system or die. I imagine smaller bombs taking out planets or moons, or smaller just laying waste to them, or half melting them. With the customisation of systems with stellar forge I'm sure this is possible. Are we all waiting for a larger thargoid war that changes things?

I suspect basic atmospheric planets are not too far away now. Sandro mentioned it recently with a "No Comment" answer - although he had to actually choose that question first (very often Frontier answer "No Comment" to content that is fairly close). Also David Braben mentioned it as upcoming content in a recent interview (but wouldn't put a time frame on it).

I would also like to see destructible stations and bases. The recent updates to add and remove stations and large ships at will, as well as the suggestions the new large bases are stepping stones to new gameplay suggest this is all possible. :)

Speaking of atmosheric landings--is anyone else bothered by all the noise when landing on an airless world? Lots of what sounds like wind and your ship being stressed by air.

Stuff like this?

I guess the ship stress makes a certain sense as gravity exerts its influence. Some of the SFX maybe sound a bit 'atmospheric', but I've never really felt like it was trying to simulate rushing wind or anything.

Am definitely looking forward to those kind of effects tho :). Buffetings from giant storms, the paint-stripping scream of atmospheric arrivals, the cruel lashings of silicate rain. Bring it on ;)

my friend,
you should work for scotland yard.

my senses tell me that you sniffed the right track.
pity pity pity because i would have prefered to see 'legs' expansion before landing on atmospheric planets.

I just hope there are planets with atmosphere and some worthwhile game content, not just the emptiness we have now.

I'm happy with atmospheric planets first (still want legs though), as long as the exploration tools are expanded upon. We desperatly need this.

I honestly have no idea what it will be at this point.
I'm more looking forward to details on 2.4, as I think that will be a good indicator of where things will be heading for upcoming updates/expansions.

Please, don't let it be: "2.4: The Thargoid War" [sour]

Not just exploration...
And mining mechanics...
And piracy mechanics...
And mission/CG depth...

Basically everything that's been sitting there for two or so years no with us assuming it's placeholder...

I agree, but as we are talking about atmospheric planets, I thought that exploration mechanics would really need an update for them to work.

Piracy needs some love, as does bounty hunting, as do combat zones. Missions are already better as of this update, and will continue to grow and get better with longer chains and branches and more types of missions so have no issues there.

Legs would be bad. Forget terraformed worlds and stations - even in the smallest 'boarding a ship' scenario you'd end up with two players running around an aircraft carrier looking for each other (anacondas are big!). Support for VR is a problem outside a cockpit, and doing zero-g locomotion well would be hard - please don't just go with magic magnetic shoes. On top of all that it would open up a huge gulf for content that would be very challenging to fill. Wandering around a station looking for people to talk to will be nice the first time, ok the second time and by the third go you'll be in a hurry and just use the bulletin board.

More stuff to do in the cockpit would be ace:
- atmospheric flight in gas giants would open up new flight and maybe stealth mechanics, new resources, gas mine outposts..
- escort missions
- covert surveillance missions
- missions that require team actions, such as large ships creating a perimeter while the stunt fighers enter the structure...
- story events - the supernova suggested by the OP sounds awesome.

Nope, if you've ever been on a sailing ship it's the same sort of noises made as the frame twists and flexes. If you have a damaged ship, the soundscape changes. Love it.

Atmo will add wind rush and rain / hail striking the canopy. The sound guys have not us disappointed yet.

I suspect 2.4 will be "Legs" with the added "Marine" role in multi-player (based solely on the pilot standing behind his seat in the PS4 trailer.) 3.0+ will be atmo landings, plant life, then animal life and eventually ELP with full blown cities.

Atmo landings would be interesting but space legs holds no interest for me now.

That was cinematic, and legs will have their own season/expansion... Or at least EVAs, maybe if we are lucky and their third IP is a third person like the outsider, we might at least get ship interiors as a bonus through the 2018... But i seriously doubt that

Getting that from one clip in a promo video is a bit of a stretch, don't you think?
I've thought they've made it pretty clear on several occasions that space legs is not coming any time soon.

I could see them potentially adding atmos landings on dead worlds in season 3, but what would be the point?
Right now we don't need more places to go, we need more things to do in the places we already can go.

Can't argue the more to do in places we can go - we could certainly use a lot more to actually do.

Although I admit, I'm at a bit of a loss to determine what that more to do might actually be.

I could see some use for surface mining, that goes beyond shoot-the-rock, collect-the-bits, envisioned as "survey the surface, pick the spot, drop the mining gear and wait for it to extract the resources", since coming back later isn't really an option for us - the whole not figuring out how to make things permanent except for planetary installations thing.

So yeah, I'm really not sure what more we can do with what we do have - a few things - NPC controlled SRV's for more interesting planetary sieges, maybe some gimmicky racing, but I'm not really all that interested in racing - there's a million other games for that.

Better exploration tools to make exploration more hands-on, but then, there's only so much to be found on dead worlds anyways.

Combat has everything it could ever want and then some.

Trade works just fine.

Mining could use a little love - it would be nice (for the explorers too) if scanning asteroid belts had a purpose (and a credit value).

Bounty Hunting just needs a raise.

Piracy works, but could use a little attention so blowing someone up becomes a truly undesired outcome.

Passengers, aside from a couple annoying bugs, just needs more bulk travel and fewer VIP's. Maybe the occasional rendezvous with the wedding barge mission, but overall it works just fine.

So what's left?

A lot of wrong in this this post. Combat is in a dreadful place. Fine they have all the tools you could possibly want, but what can you do with those tools. If you don't do PvP you have bounty farming (there is very little actual bounty hunting). You have combat zone which are as bland as you can get. That pretty much sums up the combat content. It is barebones.

Exploration tools are pretty much non-existant. Better tools will give us better reasons to go to some planets instead of ignoring them. This is desperately needed to make exploration more interesting instead of jump and honk.

Bounty Hunting should mainly contract/mission based which you get from the security contact with a list of easy, tough and elite bounties to cator for everyone.

Passengers need a passenger hub, were there are a sets of passengers going to different places, similar to a commodities market, but with destinations. There could be thousands of passengers that need moving, depending on population. The amounts vary depending on distance and get rid of all the bulk passengers missions. So passenger missions would be specific things like some scientific, corporate and luxury missions. Means there are always passengers available as well as more choice of specialist passengers.

Combat zone need a lot more variety instead of endless waves of ships. Maybe combat zones around station or installations, combat zone in planetary areas, and more specific combat missions, like take out cargo ships carrying weapons and the like.

That's are just a few examples which could improve the game in my eyes.
