Seasoned NMS YouTuber takes on ED

I've been watching Cobra's channel for a while, he's a well known member of the No Man's Sky community and has made many NMS and Waking Titan (the NMS ARG) related videos.

Recently he's being trying out Elite Dangerous and I thought I'd post a link to his ED playlist here as it's worth a watch for various reasons.

1) It's interesting to see someone come at the game on console (PS4 in this case) pretty much from scratch with nothing but the game itself and it's built in tutorials to help.

2) He's a seasoned YouTuber and podcaster so he's actually interesting, and amusing, to watch and listen to.

3) He demonstrates perfectly the swings from awe & excitement to confusion & frustration and back that I expect every ED player will empathise with.

4) On the chance that someone from FDev might see this it highlights the areas of the game (as it currently stands) that might be problematic for a new player coming in with little or no fore-knowledge and just using the in-game tools and information.

(I've linked the playlist rather than embedding the videos because although he's normally very good at not cursing during his broadcasts playing ED seems to have squeezed out the odd accidental swear from him in places.)

From the perspective of someone coming at the game on console from scratch with no prior knowledge of the ED franchise or third party tools, after 1,000 hours I have to say that it wasn't difficult for me.

Oh man, the videos he did of NMS survival mode were pretty hilarious. I can't wait to see how ED kicks his butt! :D

Also, wait until he finds out there is a ship called the Cobra!

Watched a few minutes of the first, and it is a bit too contrived for my liking.

I guess like most YouTubers it's going to come down to personal taste. I find his delivery amusing, and it is fun to watch someone flailing around in ED now that I finally feel I have a decent handle on it myself.

Watched the first one, that was the worst first landing I've ever seen. Got about 10 mins into the second & gave up, it was cringeworthy. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure many of us were this bad once, I certainly was terrible first time I tried to dock or shoot another ship but

a) I understood basic concepts like a 3D environment, and
b) I didn't put it on youtube.

Not recommended.

Hahaha! That first hyperspace jump. Yeah.. that's Elite for sure :)
Cool to see him do ED as well.
Always loved his excitement and dedication in the NMS universe.

Also never done these tutorials. The first one in his vid is quite good imo.
"hopefully you can get it right this time around" [big grin] [up]

To be honest, I find that with most YouTubers. It's all faked or highly-exaggerated reactions, faux-outrage, and desperate attempts to come across as funny and edgy. Fair play to the people who manage to pull it off though.

Good post, interesting indeed to see the new player experience from someone who (should) know what they're doing a bit.

He'll definitely end up disappointed if he keeps expecting it to be NMS, but he seems to be starting to appreciate Elite for being Elite.

Yes, the learning curve is steep, but he has the entire game ahead of him and he'll also be full of wonder. A lot of players have tried everything and are now jaded that there's nothing left for them to do - he still has everything about Elite to learn and try out, which is an experience and an accomplishment in itself.

I started playing Elite because the release of No Man's Sky, which I'd pre-ordered, was delayed.

I still play Elite, because I like what it is.

I also still play No Man's Sky. I liked what it was, and I like more what it has become, and is still becoming.

They're both very different games. Elite is intense, sim-ish, detailed and complex.
No Man's Sky is relaxing, slow-paced, and littered with lore you can actually discover without having to fly inverted over a planet for hours or days at a time, with your graphics settings turned all the way down trying to eyeball an anomaly that might be some new discovery.

When Elite Explorers 20,000+ light years out lie down to sleep for the night, they dream in No Man's Sky.

I find this particularly amusing, coming from a guy who didn't know the game and has simply seen the first of these videos...

I look at that in this way:

Some people like to play flight "sims" where the flight model is arcady, and they only have to know, push button B to shoot down the target. Nothing wrong with that.

Others, would like to get closer to reality, and know the airframe limitations, which buttons/displays/ranges sequences need to be followed, etc, that come with actually employing a weapon system. Nothing wrong with that either.

ED can be a little of both, but if it seems "unnecessarily overly complicated", then maybe it is too far along the spectrum away from arcade mode for that person. Still nothing wrong with that.

So I guess the answer to Vilmar is, because we find it fun.

Might be vaguely worth my time watching somebody move from a bad clone to the real thing, but I might need persuading.

Not a clone...just a different space game. Less realism, more arcade, definitely fun in its own right. Played it because I didn't have time for Elite...and enjoyed it.
