Second Account/Commander - Again (PC)

I know this has been asked and discussed over and over. I have searched and read numerous threads and just want to clarify how it currently works.
In the last Sale I purchased a Second copy of ED/Horizons via Steam on another Steam account. The idea was to have a second Explorer Commander way out of the bubble - or for visiting friends/family to play.
The FD faq as of last night simply says :
- Create a NEW FD account (different email from first account)
- Log out from first account in launcher then log in to new account.
If that's it - great.
BUT
The numerous older threads on this talk about :
- Creating a separate Windoze user for each commander.
- having multiple game file locations/installs, or at least convincing windows they are separate.
- journals (if that's the right word?) including data for both commander accounts.

So please forgive me if I'm being a bit dumb (it's one of my forte's!), but I'd really appreciate an up to date clarification on wether it really as simple as, just create a new FD account with a different email and then log into launcher with whichever Commander you want to play.
I would also like to have different controller settings for the different commanders as for my main account I use a hotas setup, but might want to log in to my second commander then play downstairs with a keyboard, mouse and Xbox controller via Steam link.i accept my main Commander/account couldn't be used like this without swapping button mappings and that's fine, my main account is for my personal, serious play - the second if I don't go serous way out explorer is going to be more casual/introduce others to ED.

Sorry for the wall of text, but thanks in advance for all and any guidance/advice - it's all welcome.

You could actually use only one Windows user and one launcher to login with each of the commanders. But I would not recommend it for reasons below.

You should use separated Windows users for ED:

a) If you do not want to mix the log files of both commanders. They are all saved under "C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous". For example if you use Inara it is easier to put the log files to correct commanders from there if they are in respective user's folder. And if you want to keep and see the whole history of one commander it is there in this folder as long as you do not delete any files from there.

b) If you want to use different control set or other settings and don't want to change them every time you change commander.

I am using 2 Windows accounts for my 2 commanders just to keep the logs separated for Inara. Otherwise I do not see any problem using one and same user and launcher for both commanders.

I believe it is a simple as they say these days.

I still have a seperate install for each cmdr purely so I don't have to change login details.

I only use a single windows login so my cmdrs share key bindings. I believe the log files these days have the cmdr name with the entries as all the 3rd party apps I use differentiate between the different cmdrs without any intervention from me.

Yes it is as simple as logging out of one, then logging in as other.
First time you use your new Cmdr on a machine, you will have to input an authorisation code you will be sent by email, but after that you can switch accounts from launcher as often as you like.
You will have to exit game inbetween.

All other advice relates to avoiding having to input the user and password each time you want to change Cmdr. Or for other peculiar reasons.
You will find that control settings are the same for both Cmdr's, but this actually quite handy.

Install ESX
Install Multiple Windows VM's.
Install Elite in each VM.
Run each installation separately.
Play with... yourself?

Of course, you'll need some solid hardware and a whole lot of RAM to run Multiple VM's and multiple DirectX instances, but it can be done.
