Horizons second account

I was considering a second account for exploring, but two things put me off: the price (£40); and the repeat grind to access the engineering/guardian fsd booster jump upgrade.

ED do not allow second characters, which in this instance has cost them revenue.

Not sure why (paid at a discount) extra characters are not allowed – perhaps ED are concerned that a ‘family’ would play the same account through different characters, costing them money?

Commander edition was on sale for less than a tenner and base game less than a fiver, sale must have finished this week. Just watch for the next sale.

Thanks.
Should have had this desire a little earlier, it seems ....
Full £20 +£20 (Horizons) now.

Interesting to see what the pricing model will be if ED lasts a few more years: 20 + 20 + 20 + ......
Time for battle-passes, loot crates and mircotransactions lol

+1 here - I'd like a second account for exploring, keep main account back in the bubble. LOTS of people do this by purchasing a second copy but it involves all sorts of messing about registering with a second email etc. - risk of messing up, duplicating installation etc.
Seems it shouldn't be difficult from the FD side and would open up a whole new revenue stream for FD.
I would like to buy second (3rd, 4th etc.) CMDR - I'm prepared to pay for this. I just want the convenience of this being officially supported to take the risks and hassle of running multiple accounts 'the hard way'.
Would FD care to comment on why this might not be a good thing for us and them?

BGS influence I guess, there is a cap on the amount of influence one account can have per day. I'd be interested to know if Fdev have ever commented on this too.

I've always enjoyed the freedom the beta servers offered to just go nuts with no consequences carrying over to the main game, plus I get to use all the same cosmetics & stuff ;)

otoh now you can bump up your pet bugs on the issue tracker, each extra account gets you four more votes.

Multiple accounts can hang off a single e-mail address, e.g. user+cmdr#1@gmail.com and user+cmdr#2@gmail.com are distinct but e-mails sent to both arrive at user@gmail.com - I've got a number of altCMDRs hanging off a single gmail address.

Regarding launching the game, renamed copies of the launcher executable (in the same directory) can be "logged in" to individually - open the one associated with the desired CMDR to launch the game for it.

I have three cmdr's on one copy of the game on my PS4 account.

So I'm considering a second account: how do I do this? without having to do another install and without having to use a second gmail address?

Just for further clarity: I have my main FD account and I currently have some money in my steam wallet.
How do I get my Steam account set up without doing another installation and having to faff around with keybinds and so on.

Yeah I read that and it doesn't make sense to me. :) (could be something to do with a hang over...)
Will somebody break that down for the less computer skilled? Thanks.

If you have a gmail account, you can use it for multiple Frontier store accounts, even though the store requires a unique e-mail address for each account - see the article linked below:

You can create an alias at most email providers, that way you get two email addresses which are both handled via the same account.

This.

If you "need" a 2nd account right now, you're at FDev's mercy so the smart thing to do is just keep your eyes open for sales and then snag a new account when FDev has the game discounted.

I decided to buy a 2nd account back in January.
Wasn't looking forward to "the grind" but unlocking engineers and Guardian tech turned out to be fairly trivial and I'm not in any rush to unlock fed/imp ships so the naval rank grind will take as long as it takes.

+EDIT+

As for all the faff of logging in, that turned out to be pretty simple.
I just renamed edlaunch.exe as edlaunch1.exe and then modified the desktop shortcut to run it and renamed it with the name of my main account.
I then copied & pasted edlaunch1.exe into the same directory, renamed it as edlaunch2.exe and then created a new desktop shortcut to run it and renamed it with the name of my alt-account.

I click on my main account shortcut and it opens one copy of the launcher with my main account's details stored in it.
I click on the alt-account shortcut and it opens the 2nd copy of the launcher with the alt account's details stored in it.

You do need another email address for a new Frontier Account (it is where the valication code is sent to) - so either sign for another email address somewhere or assign an email alias address in your normal email account (different providers have different methods).

You can buy your Steam version as it is at sale price now.

I am doing my sidewinder challenge on my second account...
So I have unlocked all the cool ships, running data missions works great in a Sidewinder. but since I only intend to use the Sidewinder for a really long time, this was just an easy unlock and to gain some required permits to later access the engineers, and took like 8 hours or so to complete.
Getting triple elite will take some time in a sidewinder...
Unlocking all the engineers in a sidewinder have proven to be a interesting challenge, one that I particularly is not look forward to is the mining challenge...
I have not yet considered the Tech broker stuff, but they can be really handy, but a bit limited in a Sidewinder.

Fun stuff you can with an alternate account.

To OP
These account gets on sale regularly, just keep your eyes open.
You will need TWO frontier accounts, so you need to have access to two e-mails, or use the gmail trick, other e-mail provides allows similar setups too.

In the launcher, you login with the desired account, so you do not have to have two copies of the games installed, works both with Steam version or FDev version. So even if you have bought the game on steam first and then bought a second copy using Frontier Store, you can login with the other account regardless of what game version you launch.
There should be plenty of post in this forum about people giving tips on how to use two account on the same PC.

Don’t forget, if the second account is for Exploration, that the engineering grind is almost totally unnecessary.

I’m in a 60 something ly Phantom with DW2 with pretty much just access to Elvira and Felicity....maybe the chap who does shields too I can’t remember. The FSD booster is just a couple of hours of effort too.

Frankly, if it’s an explorer account and you’ve got a Primary for Bubble stuff then your jump range simply doesn’t matter beyond fringe visits. If you get bored just log in to the other account. I was just thinking to myself last night that were it not for having two accounts I’d probably have given up on DW2 by now.
