Music is often seen as an afterthought in this business (I've been guilty of it too), but does make a big difference.
I guess it's that balance between having it complimenting the pace and feel of the game and having it totally overbearing. I made the mistake of purchasing the game Darkstar One on the premise of the demo. Unfortunately the music was as uniform and repetitive as the game play itself. Isn't it funny how adages like "Variety is the spice of life" so often come true?
Metal Gear Solid 2 - Sons of Liberty in my eyes went that extra distance and used it's music to create an ambiance far more similar to that of a movie than I had previously experienced - certainly aided by having Harry Gregson-Williams on board (The Rock, Armageddon, Shrek and a personal fav - Team America:World Police). Right from the opening there was a serious feeling of being involved - the direction in MGS2 was and still is in my opinion, very clever.
