Second Elite account confusion - I gone done messed up!

Hi all.
I saw Steam were selling E: D for 8.99 UKP and thought, darn it, I'll get one for messing about with which I don't want to do with my existing Frontier account. The 8.99 is supporting a good cause anyway.

I installed it in a seperate location to my Frontier account, and then signed in. I think this where I messed up - I used my existing account details thinking that if I was starting it from the new executable all would be well, but whenever I start it it launched my original (Horizons) save.

Have I permanetly trashed it? Do I need to Register with a different e-mail addresss/password?

Appreciate some wise words. :)

Yeah, a unique email is the key. You don't even have to use different passwords, although I'd recommend it as best practice in general.

Once you have each account assigned to a different email address, there are various ways of running them both on the same machine, even in parallel if your hardware is up to it. But getting the accounts on separate addresses is your first priority. Frontier Support should be able to help you on this, as it's a launcher issue. Whether or not the launcher is started via Steam is largely irrelevant at this stage.

Thanks guys.

I deleted the Steam install via Steam (I hope this hasn't touched my original account!) and re-installed it.

The problem is, it refuses to let me select the Register button from the initial Register/Log in requester. If I close that requester and try and select Register on the Launcher I get an error message.

I think I may have stuffed it up by using my original details and can longer disassociate the account from them.

Anyway, I've put a Ticket in so hopefully Support will be able to help.

I renamed the launcher to launcher2. That way it doesn't launch my original one. When you click on the launcher2 you will be giving the opportunity to sign in with your new email. I created a gmail account and redownloaded the launcher. It took me awhile to figure out that I never bought another version of elite. yea I bought horizons, but horizons won't work without elite installed first. o7

I bought a 3rd version once I created a new email. My problem was the 2nd version was in "my downloaded products" under my original email and I didn't know how to or if I could move that to my new email.
Support can help you with that so you have to buy another one like I did.

Every time ED is on sale I think of buying a 3rd account - It's the not the money that stops me - or fact I have 2 accounts I'm enjoying already - The reason I don't buy a 3rd is because FDev can't be bothered to make the process easy and simple:
You to have a separate Email address for each account and I really can't be bothered to go make another gmail accounts just for this
You to do you're own programming to swap config files around to switch accounts ( not a problem for me, I'm a programmer - it took a few lines in a batch file )

For FDev to make their crappy launcher handle multiple accounts should be a trivial task - yet they don't bother.
Handling multiple commanders on a single email would require a little more work by them and I suspect poor designer choices during the early days of development are reason they haven't done this yet

Is there a reason you can't use Plus Addressing? I know some sites and applications don't allow + characters in e-mail addresses but I don't know if the Frontier site and/or ED launcher are among them. If they're not, then Plus Addressing is your answer. Gmail already gives you effectively infinite e-mail addresses.

This is the method I use too, but there are others. Apparently making multiple copies of the launcher EXE (it's relatively small) lets you log into each with different credentials but using the same base game files. I haven't tried this myself since I launch everything through Steam.

It does seem like an odd choice. On the other hand e-mail addresses are a dime a dozen these days, and have been for decades if you choose the appropriate ISP or e-mail provider.

I got a swift response from the very helpful Cmdr Kosmos at support and the problem is now solved. Many thanks all.

In case anybody else has the same problem, here is the advice that worked for me:

Each Frontier account can only have one commander attached to it, so in order to create a new commander, you first have to create a new Frontier account. You can do this using our website:

https://www.frontierstore.net/customer/account/create/

You'll have to use an email address that isn't a Frontier account yet.

Once your account has been created and confirmed, use it to sign in to our website here:

https://www.frontierstore.net/customer/accountpage/

Enter your product key in the text box on this page, and click Submit Key. When this is done, you'll be able to access your new account in the Elite Dangerous launcher and create your second commander.
