Secondhand Ship Market

Hello FDev,

Yes, this has been asked before.
I am hoping for some clarity on the original DDF idea about a secondhand ship market. Do you have any plans to implement one?

I think features such as a ship's name and a ships history would be great.
Remember that some ships would have reputation modifiers due to their history.

Most people would like this too, at a guess.

Ships seem a bit too impersonal at the moment, IMHO they are like disposable commodities.
Giving ships a second-hand value would enrich the game.

PS. I'll take this opportunity to say thank-you to all the FDev staff we will never know about, all those behind the scenes. Thank-you.

Hell, now that we have engineer modules, it would be cool for folks to be able to buy refurbished modules at reduced prices (and stats).

I kinda like that idea.

Even just flavour text, it would enhance how you relate to your ship, or a second-hand one you might buy.
Ship reputations would reflect its history.
More 'famous' ships would hold a greater value.

The age of the ship would reflect wear and tear.
Older models depreciate, but older ships with high reputations would be even more valuable.
I think it is the hull of the ship that counts.

At the moment we recycle ships constantly, and modules.
Secondhand ships could be stripped to the hull, or be sold with modules.
The Hull is the reputation giver, but secondhand modules should exist too.

This could be quite interesting, and lower the bar of entry. Consider:

A second hand ship would never be able to have "Hull Repair" above it's starting percentage when purchased. An Asp bought with 87% hull will always have a maximum of 87% when "fully repaired". Maybe a good price on that Python, but man... only 74% Hull. Could be ouch.

A second hand ship could even be available in non-stock builds. As though the prior commander had sold a ship with some outfitting installed. Maybe it comes with a 4A FSD installed, and a 5C Thrusters. Maybe occasionally an engineered module.

A second hand ship is sold at 20% loss, compared to 10% on new ships.

So when browsing, it wouldn't be just "All used Diamonback Explorer cost exactly the same". But there would be some comparison shopping to consider. The Hull value, what modules come installed (maybe a gem), and they could also have the heavily chipped/worn paint, too, for extra visual fun.

A good place for RNG to create a few finds. A place for CMDR who would like to try a ship on a budget, accept a few tradeoffs, maybe get an interesting bargain on an included module.

They wouldn't even have to be persistent, IMO. Just "refurbished" modules that folks could take in lieu of brand new class modules. The price decrease could correspond with the stats degradation.

Good options for folks who want to upgrade their modules, but are cost-sensitive.

Exactly. I think it's a hell of an idea.

I'll give you a good deal on an A rated FDL, if you don't mind the coffee stains and cat hair in the controls..

Well that's silly. Of course the ships will be detailed before they are resold... they're just not gonna fix that crack in the frame ;)

And there we go: a player driven market for stuff, in this case, ships. Now that would be an awesome thing. You could rip people off, sell stuff you don´t need dirt cheap, barter with players and whatnot. That could even be expanded to other commodities or even super rare materials.

Cracks. Plural. I've flown most of my equipment like I've stolen it. Full disclosure and whatnot.

And you'll NEVER get all the cat hair out. It's impossible. I've tried. Haven't seen a rat float by in years... but there's always a trade-off...

Please no more RNG. We have enough of it as is.

Why you hate rats so much???Don't count on being rescued by the fuel rats.

Muhahaha
I had very hard to laugh because i thought about my cats and their hairs. It's UNBELIEVABLE where you find them all so i'm not sure if i would be able to sell a ship where i lived with my cats :D [haha]

Permanent wear and tear would need to be a thing for this to be anything more than just flavor text.

Do we have wear and tear? The only thing I see is the repair all button.

Some permanent wear on the ship would be awesome, maybe fixable with engineers?

RNG is the nazz, yo.

You know what I hate? I hate boardgames with deterministic styles of play. I hate them and I want to burn them and run them over with my truck.

Give me a good dice-roller any day.

In my mind, RNG has nothing to do with a secondhand ship market.
I was thinking of player ships being secondhand, like when you sell yours it goes to market.

Get rid of the 10% loss and replace it with a player driven secondhand ship market.
No RNG involved.

If ships can gain value by having an associated reputation from previous owners, that is good.
It could also get rid of rank locks as private owners can buy and sell secondhand ships.

Well, there's good rats and bad rats. Fuel rats are good. Pi-rats are bad.

Squeaky long tailed conduit chewing hole making MRE pack eating rats give me anger issues. And firing live rounds inside your boat is a no-no... so.. hello kitty!

Permanent degradation to hull and modules can be implemented, based on age.
Slow degradation to a relevant stat, like ship hull, or module integrity.
Have resale value reflect this.

What I find interesting is if ships have a reputation, one that in part can be passed on with the hull.
